i'm sure this is a fairly common problem, so i'm hoping some of you may have some suggestions. i've just recently (within the past 2 weeks) completed secondaries at 5 schools. my application is decent--avg gpa, slightly above avg mcat, great research and clinical. i'm fairly confident that had i applied earlier, i'd have an acceptance. however, i'm worried that applying late has substantially hurt my chances for admission to the c/o 2009. most likely, i'll be waiting to hear sometime into the summer, when the c/o 2010 cycle will begin. between now and when the new app cycle begins, nothing much will change with my app. still doing research and DO shadowing. so, i'm concerned that if i have to apply again, i'll be at a disadvantage as a re-applicant because my application will remain essentially the same.

any thoughts?

thanks

First, I wouldn't give up on this application cycle at all, if I were you. Did you apply to several schools? Chances are you're looking at an acceptance sometime this year. However, if you do have to apply again, I wouldn't think that you're at a disadvantage. You'll have to do the same rigamarole that every other reapplicant goes through (ie update your PS, try to get a new LOR, etc), but I think your chances would be just as good as if you had applied the first time. In fact, some schools will accept your previous year's LOR's so you don't even have to resubmit them. I wouldn't worry just yet though. I'll bet you get some good news soon. Good luck.

Hey,
I would start out by calling the admissions office of the schools to which you are applying. I have found that if you ask specific questions (eg, is the class looking too full to get serious consideration at this point?, am i looking at a wait list right now, regardless of my qualifications?, what is the school's policy on reapplicants with little new on their transcripts if they were denied solely based on late applications?) Most schools would be happy to address these questions. If they deny you, there are also ways to nicely ask what more you can do to increase the likelihood of acceptance. I've had friends not change a thing and have gotten in without a problem.
You've already put in secondaries right? so now you cannot give up. So, don't sweat this upcoming class. But if you are concerned about where you stand for next year, call. It won't hurt. Good Luck 👍

I don't think being a re-applicant would hurt your chances for c/o 2010 if it comes to that. Med-schools like to see that you are determined to get in and most of the schools I went to encouraged people to try again the following year saying that often people get in on the 2nd time around with the same stats. Lots of luck either way!

Good advice. Just to update anyone interested in KCUMB. Their last interview date is 2/15 and all the slots for interviews have already been filled 🙁 . My app was complete towards the end of Jan (kinda late for them) because I missed the chance for invite at this stage. However, the lady I spoke with was very nice and helpful; she said that there is still a chance to be invited if enough people decline to accept (my quess is that the chance is very small at this point). She even suggested to apply EARLY in the next cycle, really does make a difference.
