If I am applying for MD schools but I am understandably uncertain whether I will be accepted, what are the suggestions regarding D.O. schools?

Do you apply for D.O. schools at the same time or do you wait until later on? Any and all advice welcome!

Thanks.

Yes. Apply at the same time, after thorough research.

EDIT: Due to the cheery attitude of the OP, I thought you had a reasonable desire to attend a DO school if not MD. Considering your response, I'd say: don't apply to DO schools. You'll end up one of these *****s asking if you should turndown the DO acceptance to take another shot at MD.

Do you have a strong preference for MD over DO? Or are you ok going either way. If the former, then I would wait a cycle and wait to get rejected from every MD option. If the latter, I'd apply at the same time.

Would much prefer MD.....

We encounter this issue every year with people who didn't want to go DO but applied anyway and got in.

Think long and hard about if you were accepted only to a DO school would you rather take a year to improve your application and re-apply the next year to MD schools or go to the DO school. At the end of the applicaiton cycle every year we see a few threads from people who didn't want to go DO but applied anyway.

The general consensus is "why did you apply DO if you didn't want to go?" And they are right. Don't apply if you don't want to go to a DO school.

I think you answered your question. If you don't get into an MD program, then re-apply MD alongside DO. But definitely ONLY focus your efforts your first cycle on MD.

I personally don't care either way. My gf was adamant about MD. She go into an MD as a re-applicant and never applied DO. She was very happy as she didn't want to go to a DO school no matter what.

Would much prefer MD.....

Fair enough but you'll be speaking a different tune if you don't get into an MD school. Swallow your pride and apply to both.
No pride, just preference.

I would prefer the MD but I think if it were between DO or waiting to reapply MD I'd prefer DO. I think. 🙂

To all- What's the suggested time frame? Any tips?

:-( Ouch. Thanks for the cheery comment though.

My last reply says the opposite of what you assumed.

I wasn't trying to be harsh, sorry. The bottom line here: if, at the end of the application cycle, you had a DO acceptance, and you'd probably turn it down to apply MD again, DO NOT APPLY TO DO SCHOOLs.

But, if you're SURE you'd rather take the DO acceptance and run, go ahead and apply to DO schools at the same time.

Do enough research ahead of time to be reasonably sure of your position on this.

I like your advice - I appreciate it. I would not want to take a seat away from people who want DO as a first choice.

Thanks!

You're forgetting one scenario, MD wait list and DO acceptance. This is what made my gf decided not to apply DO. She knew she would never want to go to a DO school if there were any hope for an MD program. Hence, my suggestion to apply to DO school second cycle.

Just remember, once you are accepted to a DO program and turn it down, the DO door is forever closed. Use this door wisely.
