i was wondering if i could apply to md/phd programs after my application has been submitted. i'm going to be applying to a few md only schools but mostly md/phd programs. i wanted to submit my application to the md only school and then apply to md/phd programs after i have submitted because i wanted to get verified asap but wanted to spend some extra time on the two md/phd essays. can i submit with md only schools then later on add md/phd programs and fill out the essays without having to re-submit?

thanks in advance

So, more specificaly, AMCAS says that your essays may not be changed after submitting and certifying your application the first time. You MAY add programs or program types, i.e. add an MD/PhD. But If you don't have an MD/PhD essay the first time you can't add one the second time.

thanks. it is kind of a grey area on amcas. my gut was telling me that it was possible. i couldn't imagine being barred from applying to md phd schools just because you didn't initially add them. i know a lot of people waiting for mcat scores who only add one school to get verified then add schools later. i will try searching or call amcas. thanks guys

So I e-mailed AMCAS a couple of hours ago and they responded because I had the same question.

"Dear Applicant,

Thank you for contacting AMCAS.

After submitting your application, you can add medical schools provided that the deadlines have not yet passed.

To do so, go back to the Medical Schools section of the application, add the schools, complete any additional essays if required, and then go back to the Main Menu. Click "Submit Application," and you will be charged $33 for each medical school you added.
There is no additional processing time to send the application to your new schools, but you must re-submit for the changes to process"

So apparently you can add MD/PhD schools after verification for MD only schools then fill out the additional essays. I'm interpreting this correctly, right? I'm getting a little confused on the difference between re-submit and re-verification. Verification is what takes 6-8 weeks and submitting just means sending to schools?

From the AMCAS 2012 Instruction Manual, page 62:

Section Eight: Essay(s)

Every applicant is required to submit a Personal Comments essay. Applicants who apply to an M.D./Ph.D. program must complete two additional essays: the M.D./Ph.D. Essay and the Significant Research Experience Essay.

Once the application is submitted this information cannot be changed.

From my understanding, not submitting these essays is like submitting a blank essay.

Sorry for the bump, but FWIW, you can add the MD/PhD essay after verification. That's how I did it. You do NOT want to submit blank essays however. This only works if you were originally applying as MD only (like Mike7704 suggested)

It seems contrary to what they wrote but such is life.

(Thought it might be helpful information for next years applicants.)

To bump this -- anyone know if this is still the case? (As in, can I submit my MD/PhD essays after submitting AMCAS, or has the policy on this changed)?

I agree, bump..

I want to apply MD only, then after I get my MCAT retake score back apply MD/PhD if I'm competitive. So if we apply MD only at first and later go back and add MD/PhD and be able to do the essays? And, if so, will we have to be verified all over again?

Hmm another question...

So I am in a similar boat where I retook the MCAT and am planning on applying to MD/PhD's depending on the strength of my results. I already applied to a couple of MD programs. Can I apply MD/PhD to the some of the schools that I already applied to as an MD applicant?

For instance if I applied to University of Maryland as an MD, can I apply to their MD/PhD program after getting my MCAT scores? Or would I have to apply again and pay the application fee again?

I understand that I would be able to write the MD/PhD essays, but my main question is if I can apply to the same school for an MD/PhD instead of an MD, and if I would need to pay the application fee again.

This is an institution-specific question.

I'm writing to confirm that for this cycle I have submitted my MD applications and have gotten verified. This weekend I decided to pursue MD/PhD at one school after receiving my score on May 11th. I am able to add this MD/PhD program and the new essay sections pop up, however, it does state that after I pay and submit the essay, I will not be able to edit it, just as it does for the personal statement.

I'm in the same boat. Please can you clarify?

Are you able to add the two extra essays post-verification?
