Applying next year...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
you have plenty of time to observe. just make sure to get 3+ settings. 200 hours at 3 settings beats 2,000 hours at 2 settings, hands-down.

4.0 whoah! What other prereqs do you still have to take/are taking now? Get multiple settings. I did in-patient nursing home, early intervention home visits, out patient ortho, and out patient women's health. I had a little over 150 hours total. I got into 4 of the 7 schools I applied to (I'm waiting to hear from 1 more and I was waitlisted at 2) and my GPA is 3.82 overall with a prereq GPA of 3.75. Grades are the most important thing. GRE and hours are what they look at big time too.

You aren't starting your observation hours "so late"... ~150 hours in 4 settings is the goal I personally would shoot for...you could complete this by the end of the summer easily if you are diligent. Assuming you are graduating Spring 2016 then sometime this upcoming summer is when you should be submitting applications. I started observation hours in January/February and was ready to submit hours wise by August, and could have sped up the process if I had wanted to.

Also, don't take the GRE until you are consistently hitting a bare minimum of 310V+Q. Verbal component must be at least a 155. 320 is the preferred target, with 160V if possible. Just encouraging you to avoid putting a bad score on your application and/or having to retake.

Let me tell you this. I came here around 6 months ago looking for advice as well.

I had a 4.0, hadn't taken the GRE, and was also starting to observe (August 2014). I observed for 42 hrs inpatient, 20 hrs sport peds outpatient ortho in the same month that I applied and also took the GRE and got a 302 and 4.0AW. I still lacked confidence in my application, but guess what.. I got accepted to all of the schools that I applied. LORs and essays also count of course, but I didn't realize how that GPA can really help you out!! Two schools that I applied had an average of 154 in both verbal and quantitative and 4.5AW, I got a 145 verbal, 157 quantitative and a 4.0AW with 4 days of studying. I was bummed I didn't meet their requirements, but now I laugh at how nervous I was. You're not starting late, I got accepted to 3 schools in the next 5 months afterwards and graduated last December. Being that you have a 4.0, you may earn a high GRE score as well...so don't worry. I read a GRE book from Princeton Review I believe in those 4 days before I took it. Foolish and risky of myself, but I was working 30 hrs/wk, and observing 20 hrs in those two settings so it was hard.

You will persevere!
