Hi guys,

I'm an old time listener, first time caller. I have a question:

I have been talking to a few friends about applying for the 2012 term and I was told that it's too late now and that I should just save my money and wait for next year to apply because by the time my AACOMAS application is processed, transcripts verified, etc. etc. etc., schools will have filled up most of their spots. I would have applied earlier, but I wanted to wait for my MCAT score to come in first.

I tried searching for answers and found some older posts, but many seemed outdated, and I was also wondering how my specific situation compares.

I'm a non-trad student. cGPA=3.1, sGPA=3.3, MCAT= PS9,V9,B11, 29Q
33 years old, with a wife and daughter.

My application would be submitted in the next 5-7 days. Thoughts???

It depends on your ECs as well... my advice would of course be to apply next cycle. Your chances this cycle are slim at getting an interview. You may snag one, but financially it's just not worth the risk of spending all that cash on a slim chance. You'll have a MUCH better shot if you apply early next cycle. Your MCAT is solid. Your GPA is a bit low but if you apply early and broadly next cycle, you'll be rolling around in all your interview invites. 🙂 Check out all the success stories in the Underdog thread if you wish to confirm this.

Best of luck. 😎

They are right. I talked to DMU about it and they said half their spots are full by december. Only one school but I pretty accurate representation I would say. Being that many schools are scheduling intervieews for december and later, by the time you get verified, secondaries submitted, and complete at schools, you are likely looking at feb interviews and later. At this point you could be interviewing for waitlist spots. Not saying it isn't possible, and many have done it, just the odds are against you and applying june 1st will very likely get you an acceptance. Let's build up your ECs.

Last year I applied VERY late, wasn't complete until March. Waitlisted at 2 schools--so you never know. My MCAT was much lower, GPA much higher. Some schools do interview until April. AZCOM interview was in april last year and they told us there were 30 spots left. Of course your chances are better next year, but you could still try if you don't mind spending the money.

Like others have said, it's a financial decision. If you can spare the cash for this cycle, then I say go for it. You never know. You're stats are fine, and being a Non-Trad, they may weigh your life experiences more heavily than say a 22 year old fresh out of Undergrad. It's definitely possible; although your chances are MUCH higher next year, I wouldn't say that your chances are necessarily "Low." If you don't mind putting in some overtime at work to help pay for the application fees/travel costs of interviews, then do it. If nothing comes out of it this cycle, at least you've been through the process and hopefully gotten some valuable interview experience so that next cycle you can knock em dead.

Some good points have been made. I just wish it wasnt so expensive to apply. Then the decision would be much easier.

Last year I applied VERY late, wasn't complete until March. Waitlisted at 2 schools--so you never know. My MCAT was much lower, GPA much higher.

GPA in my last 45 units is 3.93.
GPA from my earlier academic performance, when I was in my early/mid 20's, was a disgusting 2.5.

Schools that say "what have you done for me lately?" Those are my kind of schools!!! lol

Do remember, there is more than $$ to factor.

If you apply and get ignored due to being so late in the cycle, next year you are a reapplicant.

There is a lot of debate about how much that impacts you but you WILL be expected to tell them what you changed about your application so be prepared to add EC's and depth.

Applying now is going to make it a little more difficult. A lot of seats are getting filled. Granted it is going to cost money to apply to a lot of schools, but I know my school was interviewing up until March last year.

If this year doesn't work out, DO NOT GIVE UP! Get your application in the very first day possible. You can start entering your ACOMAS application a few weeks early (at least you could a couple of years ago) so the day applications opened I turned mine in.
