Hey all,

Thanks for taking the time to check out this thread. I just wanted to ask for your personal opinions. This will be my first time applying!

Personal statement: Under construction. Not sure whether to include stuff about manual dexterity or what. Or... personal experience. Also, is it okay for the personal statement to be a narrative?

General background: As a freshman in college, I've been hit with academic punches, especially in biology. Received C+ both semesters in general biology, bringing my GPA to the pits. Had a 3.0 GPA. After realizing my mistakes, I picked myself up. (Btw, I'm an economics major). Now I have a 3.6+ oGPA and 3.45+ sGPA. I haven't gotten anything in the B range since freshman year (junior now).

I have great LORs and I have a lot of leadership positions and extracurriculars on top of my grades. I've done research, community service, and a mission at a third world country (which I talked about in my personal statement).

DAT scores:
22 BIO
29 GC
28 OC
25 TS
17 RC [which still concerns me to this very day]
20 QR
23 AA
22 PAT

How many schools should I apply to in order to be in decent shape for this upcoming cycle? As a NY resident, I'm applying to all the NY schools. But, I'm really anxious about this cycle. Where else should I apply that might consider me a competitive applicant?

:scared::scared:

Thanks for all your thoughts!

I'd add Tufts, BU, Case, and USC to your list.

Yea, I'm thinking of adding those. Not sure about Case. I'm also considering Penn, which might be a reach... A lot of people have to said to apply to 10+ schools though

Thanks Maygyver! Hopefully I'll be alright. Appreciate it

Any tips?

Apply early. Apply smart. Follow any instructions given properly and never hesitate to call schools, but don't be excessive. And prepare to lose a lot of money 😀

definitely add Penn and maybe Uconn, UMDNJ, or Maryland. I don't think any of them are reaches for you. good luck, you should do well this cycle. 👍 (just my opinion, but i wouldn't apply to case either unless you are really interested in the school)

Yeah I'm thinking of applying to your suggested schools. Thanks for your confidence! Yeah, I'm not really appealed by Case, which is why I didn't want to apply.

Thanks! 🙂

Wow we have such similar stats! My B-s and C+s in a few lower level science classes screwed me over freshman year too.

You should also apply to Upenn and UCSF cuz that's where I'm applying. I don't think that you have to apply to more than ten schools because you have strong stats plus it's super expensive. I'll only be applying to 7.

We're identical people, Lane (or... ______) Hahah.
Yeah, I only had two C+ though, only in bio. Everything else was A/A- and A and A- in biochemistry. But you KILLED the DATs. I guess you and I are not so different after all...

I'm probably going to apply to UPenn but not sure about UCSF... but I'll do it anyway.

Where will you be applying? You have strong stats as well!

Yo are you also gonna apply to Harvard?

Haha, I was considering it but then I realized:
1) I won't be competitive enough
2) I don't want to attend a research-based school

Are you? I'd be wasting money if I applied to Harvard

Hmm. I was thinking your AA would be higher than 22 with those scores... weird.
