Hi everyone,
So I'm planning to apply for this cycle, I graduate next spring 2017 and I'm taking the DAT this summer. I have an overall gpa of 3.1, but not because of my science classes. I used to be a journalism major for two years, and ended up getting quite a few C's, not because the classes were difficult, but because I was already working in the news industry for very long hours and for journalism gpa isn't necessarily important, it's more about networking. As long as you graduate you are okay.
I decided to switch to preVet about three years ago, and I was able to gain many experiences that required leadership which I'm planning to use for dental school application. This past December I finally decided I wanted to become dentist ( I had always been in between veterinary and dentistry). I worked at an animal clinic and shadowed a dentist and I realized I enjoyed dentistry a lot more.
Now, I am deciding to apply for this cycle my gpa is a bit low, but since I switched to biology to fulfill my prereqs Ive only received A's and B's in all my sciences and math, and never retook any science classes, Ive passed them all the first time around.
My only concern is that I've only shadowed one dentist since December (three times a week), and I have other leadership experiences as a volunteer coordinator, being news producer,etc... but not having to do with dentistry. I also have one recommendation from a science professor and the dentist I shadow and Im trying to get another science professor to write one.
Do you guys think I have good chance in getting into any dental schools? So far Im applying to NYU, Lecom, Nova, Howard, West Virginia, UConn and BU. I'm still doing my research on others, but so far these are the schools I'm applying to for sure.

Cannot comment on your chances without a DAT score. How many shadowing hours do you have? Remove Howard if you aren't an underrepresented minority.

As of right now my science gpa is at 3.3, and I am taking my DAT in July.

What is your state of residency?

Florida, and thanks for the link! 🙂

No problem.
Why don't you apply to UF? It's your state school and they prefer Florida residents over everyone else.

At the same time, UConn looks out for CT residents first, then New England residents, and then the rest of the country, AND their average GPA is a 3.6 with a 21 DAT....so it's not looking too good for you there.

Focus on the DAT for now. Aim for a 21+. If you can get that, then I'd say you have a fighting chance at getting accepted this cycle.

I wanted to apply to UF, but I heard that they're really big on research, which I don't have, that's why I didn't consider it, but I could still give it a shot.
Thank you for the advice!!
