  1. Pre-Podiatry
I will be 27 when I enter podiatry school in the fall of 2014. Will I be one of the "old guys"? Also a family member told me I should not do podiatry because it is a field where you will be forced to buy into a practice (as in the only way to practice). I told them that is becoming less and less common (to own your own practice). I mentioned that people are coming out of great residency programs well trained and getting 130-150k + benes at multispecialty groups. Good response or am I wrong?

It is true that Pods work at office based practices since hospitals do not hire pods. But you do not need to buy into a practice or open your own. You will most likely work for someone and they will give you the option of buying into the practice as a partner after a few years of working. This is actually a PERK. So if you want to just be an employee, that is actually more preferable to the other partners in the office.

You can also work for the government in VA hospitals and in prison hospitals. That is another route to go.

I have seen starting salaries more than 200K+ if you end up being recruited by an ortho group.

As far as being 27, the average age of 1st year medical students is 24. So 27 isn't old at all. There are plenty of older students in pod school. I would say about 30 percent are non-traditional students.

YOU OLD FART!!

I am 27 as well. So old!!

I think you gave him a good response. Who knows exactly what any medical employment will be in ten years? It changes and I am sure you will find employment for something to meet your needs.

SLCpod and KSUCPMhopeful14 I am sorry...

...but you are both too old for this. Podiatry is a very long process and should not be tempted by anyone over the age of 12. If you are foolish enough to pursue this path I guarantee you will be drinking prune juice my 2nd year, using a walker by 3rd year, and cleaning your dentures by 4th. If by some miracle you make it to residency your grand kids will have to wheel you around the hospital. But do not despair! I hear the apple sauce in the cafeteria is TO DIE FOR!

Now let me tell you some-thin sunny boy, as a 28 year old just entering this profession.... I am only doing it b/c admissions offered me the senior discount on coffee! There may have been other reasons but...well ...Alzheimer s...what were we talking about?
