Its been one of my dreams to attend Harvard, since I was a kid I wanted to go to Harvard Law but slowly transitioned to Dentistry....Quick and dirty, do you guys think I stand a chance?

GPA: 3.89
sGPA: 3.77
DAT: 21 🙁
EC: 100 hours of shadowing, 50 hours of community service, 100 hours of hospital experience, and 25 hours with an oral surgeon.

I think my EC and DAT are weak

nope sorry buddy
but u still have a chance a a lot of great schools

you'd prob need like a 24ish for harvard

if you dont mind me asking---y do u want to go there?

I've seen a few SDN members with 21 on DAT getting interviews from Harvard.. but i think Harvard looks at things beyond just numbers... u mentioned that your EC isn't strong.. so Harvard .. prob not :\

I think the other posters may have been a bit harsh. I did not get into harvard, but I did get an interview (and am waitlisted) with similar numbers (GPA lower, DAT a smidgen higher) so I think acceptance could be very possible for you. Of course, you should really make sure you don't just want to go for the brand, but if you've researched the program and it truly seems like a good fit, you should certainly apply. I think it's a wonderful program.

Good luck to you. 🙂

does harvard like to see research/publications by their applicants? just throwing it out there... gluck!

Getting into Harvard is a crap shoot no matter what your scores and ECs are (unless you are below 3.0 GPA and 18 DAT).

Assuming you have more impressive EC's than you've briefly listed, I'd say you have a shot. Don't worry too much about your DAT. I've seen people get accepted to Harvard with a 21. Unfortunately for people like me, Harvard doesn't stress DAT as much as places like Columbia and UCLA. I'd really like to go to Harvard as well, and I'm just trying to figure out that secret formula..

I think the secret formula is this: they are looking to make their class consisting of individuals from unique and different backgrounds, individuals who would be able to contribute to the school and to their peers in different ways. The problem is that you don't know who you are competing against, and you don't know what kinds of criteria they use to pick individuals to fit their class.

Agree with this. Obviously the higher your #s are the better (and yours are on the lower end of people who get interviews) but it really does seem fairly random who gets interviewed. They see something they are looking for something above and beyond stats.

It seems like success in research is pretty much a pre-req to getting in to Harvard. Anyone care to comment on this?

UNITIX, if your extra-curricular activity "weak" go do something about...
It's not June yet. Luckily for you, ec is the easiest category to fix on an application

I interviewed at Harvard, and by their explanation of the application process....it's not all about numbers. I'd say research is definitely a necessity though. Stats might land you an interview, but that's as far as you get with them....after that its your personality, life experiences, goals, the intangibles, etc.

To the OP, I'd say you have a shot. Your stats are about average for their acceptances but we don't know your life story. I would highly encourage you to apply because you just never know. I applied on a whim just out of curiosity and got an interview without expecting it....go for it! 🙂 Good luck!

The ADEA guide says the average Harvard student in the 2008 entering class has a DAT score of 21, sGPA of 3.80, and oGPA of 3.82. You don't need a 24 on the DAT to get in. Based on stats, you are average and definitely have a shot.

To get accepted, they want more than just stats, but unfortunately I don't know their magic formula. If I were you, I would start with research, more community service, and something else that makes you unique. But that's just a start...

Like everyone said, your stats are high enough IMO. It's the ECs that will (or will not) put you over the top.

ill tell you what, your stats are not far off from mine and i got in. Just boost your EC like everyone was saying especially with shadowing hours, etc. Also a large part of their decision lies in how they view you as a person. Stats etc, will just get your foot in the door.

good luck

What were your EC's like? What do you think did the trick for you?
