I recently received an e-mail from LECOM encouraging us to apply there to attempt to matriculate THIS YEAR, even though it's already March. My stats are competitive for LECOM (3.66 cumulative, 3.61 science, 31 MCAT), but is it really worth it for me to apply this late? They also told me there are 4 spots left for the PCSP 3-year program. I noticed that other schools (Touro) also have their deadlines around April 1st.

I was originally planning on applying next cycle and taking the year off. Should I bother spending money to apply to LECOM + Touro this cycle? Thanks guys

Yea I would have to say hold off as well. Apply MD and DO as soon as the next cycle opens and you will get in

At this point I really think it's too late and it is still expensive. Touro's secondary alone will set you back $200.

Also, if you don't get in you will be labeled as a re-applicant next cycle. I don't know how much this hurts you, but it must mean something otherwise it wouldn't be there.

True okay thanks!

Yup, apply broadly to MD schools next cycle and you should have a chance. Throw in there a few DO schools too just in case.
I receive multiple emails from LECOM encouraging me to apply. So far I've heard nothing from both Bradenton and Eerie this cycle despite my early application. Save your money for the next cycle!

Re-applicant only hurts if you foresee doing nothing to improve your application. Just an fyi.

I think they send that email to everyone. I got one last year.

Pretty sure it's just a ploy to get more money in secondary fees. As was mentioned, you weren't necessarily singled out, it's a generic email sent to various people.

That is not true. Your application is viewed differently by many schools and what could one do between now and June to improve upon the application?

That's what I felt too.

Good point. Thanks for the responses!

I am very leery of this. My suggestion is to apply June 1 and save up some money, not spend it now chasing the wind.

People get really desperate this time of year and emails like that get people to throw money at them.

Holy cow, are we really only a few months away from the next cycle!?

Really People???

I say do it. If they are sending out that email now, it means you still have a chance and with your stats you definitely would get in.

It's worth not waiting a whole year to start school, unless you're in paradise living at home working the job you have now for another 16 months.

If OP has cash to burn then he can go for it but it would be better to apply early next cycle. I'm sure the IIs would pour in and he would have many schools to pick from. What if he gets accepted to LECOM and ends up hating it?

I'm pretty sure some schools have learned to hold out spots for applicants who didn't make it to MD schools and are now in desperation mode.

At the end of the day you could say this about any school. If his goal is to become a physician and not waste 16 more months doing it, it can be done.

Applying this late to DO schools may look like you're desperate to get into an osteopathic school because you didn't get into MD (not saying this is your situation necessarily). The schools now are wait listing a lot of people this late, so you may just get into a situation like that. Best to wait. You have good stats and probably won't have a problem applying in the summer! Best of luck to you.

You think that osteopathic schools, which have plenty of applicants who they consider qualified, hold spots for people who were so disinterested in attending DO schools that they didn't apply until after they were unsuccessful everywhere else? Nobody is flattered by being a back up plan. I think they've learned that desperate MD applicants are a source of quick, impulsive application fee payments for apps they will never review.

You don't see top schools sending out these kinds of emails -- it's classless, makes them look slimy, and overall reflects poorly on the institution. I think the students/alumni should tell the school to cut this out.
