After sifting through many school-specific discussions, etc. etc. I decided I at least wanted to apply to this particular reach school. I hope to get to know the school more as I visit, etc.

The secondary app. for this school asks "Why are you applying to this school?" *Note: this question is optional.

I don't want to say I became interested because of a specific forum...what can I say? Or should I just leave the question blank?

Discuss why actually want to apply there. Even if SDN gave you the idea, why did it give you the idea? Go on their site and try to find some unique aspect of their curriculum that you like and put it down. Don't leave it blank, even if it's optional.

1. What specifically on SDN have you read that has made this school so appealing to you? You could give the arguments on the posts you read here as reasons.

2. Check out the school's website and take a look at their mission statement, curriculum, specialties, etc. A lot of times when med schools ask you this question, they're actually looking to see if you've been doing your homework on them and know what their school is all about.

What's the deal with "optional" essays in secondaries... are they really optional or is it some sort of trick and you are strongly recommended to fill it out?

Even if it says that it is optional, you should still fill it out. Main reason being that it gives them more insight into who you are. Also, it won't look good, as leaving that blank suggests you are lazy
