Are there any negatives to applying to MD/MPH programs, strictly in terms of your application and chances of admittance. Will schools that do not have combined programs be like thats what he wants to do, and pass me by? In terms of the schools with the combined programs how does applying to combined programs affect your application?

If you're a strong applicant, I don't see why pursuing MD/MPH would hinder your application. I suppose if you are rejected for the combined program, they would still consider you for the straight MD as they do for MD/PHD, but the MPH programs are often less competitive than the MD. For the schools where you are not applying MD/MPH, I don't think they would know that you're applying to the dual degree since they don't know where else you have applied. If you are really interested in the public health aspect, go for it, but I don't think it gives you extra points in the admissions game. Good luck!

you will waste your own time and effort and that of others

There should be no effect on the application process...most schools with MD/MPH require you get accepted into the MD program before you are considered for the MPH half...and if you really want an MPH go for it...don't be shy about telling schools without MD/MPH that is what you want...There is nothing wrong with looking past the individual patient to their community!
