My question is this: I have a finance degree and 2 years of sales experience in the Operating room. Recently I came back to school for a non degree to take the science requirements. This summer I took chem I and currently taking chem II. In the fall I'll take 3 bio's and Orgo1. In the Spring the rest of the remaining classes. Hopefully I'll be done by june of next year, if not then by SummerI of 2005. What are my chances of getting accepted to NYU, Stoneybrook or Buffalo. Since I'll only have grades for ChemI&II, Bio's, and Orgo by the time I'll apply. I'll take my DAT's in April. Would I be at a disadvantage? How should I proceed on this matter? Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you want to apply for Fall of 2005 entrance (Class of 2009), you should be filing your AADSAS and secondary applications NOW, and have either already taken the DATs or will be taking them very soon.

Dental schools start sending out acceptance letters for Fall 2005 in December this year. Obviously taking the DATs next April would be way too late.

You might want to consider applying for the Fall 2006 cycle instead.

It sounds to me like you are a New York State resident. If that is the case, you should apply to all four New York schools-- Stony, Buffalo, NYU and Columbia. Stony is the hardest of the four to get into.

HTH!

So when is the BEST (basically earliest) time to apply for a new year in dental school? Dental schools hand out acceptance letters in December??? That confuses me when is the first day of school? I'm only a freshmen in college so I haven't done much research.

Here is an example: the ability to apply became available as of may 2004. If you applied in may 2004, schools could send out acceptances starting Dec of 2004, which would be for classes starting fall of 2005. Get it? If you apply the at the earliest possible date(somewhere in mid-may) you are applying nearly a year and a half before you would start class.

Apply in May/June of 2005 for matriculation in 2006. If you take the DAT in April you will be all right... you may even want to take it in the summer to give you plenty of time to study. Make sure you get good grades in the classes coming up and that you rock the DAT. Good luck!
