Dear SDN members,

I am applying for internal medicine residency this year and want your advice on my program list. I have been told by my mentor that I can "comfortably be selective" due to my "paper application", but we only get one chance, and I want to be safe.

I am at a top 15 med school, step 1 in the 260s, step 2 in 270s, and honored all clinical rotations to date including third year medicine, medicine sub-I, ICU/CCU sub-I, and infectious disease sub-I. I have a Master's degree in clinical research, and have 2 publications in press and at least 1 more to be submitted hopefully by the end of the year. Also some extra-curriculars like involvement in our student-run free clinic, starting an organization, and other minor things.

I am naturally a cautious person and would really appreciate your impression on what sorts of programs I have a solid chance in.

Thank you in advance for your time and sincerity.

You have a shot maybe at some low tier programs, more likely community. I'd apply very broadly and interview everywhere possible. Good luck with this uphill battle, but you should come out OK, but don't be surprised if you have to scramble into family in South Dakota.
