Anyone putting all their eggs in one basket?

For me, it's because I'm married and my wife has a job she loves where we live. We also own a house. On top of that, if I don't get in at my state school, I can't reason why I'd get in out of state.

You can apply to private schools as well, certain public schools are out-of-state friendly. The ADEA guide will provide you statistics on this. There are pros and cons to applying to just one school....

+ They know you won't turn down an acceptance from them
- They might question your dedication to dentistry

I think if you're in life situation which doesn't permit you to move, and there's only one school nearby, that's the only thing you'll be able to do, so nothing wrong with that. If you don't get in this year, let your wife know that you would stand better chances if you apply to more schools next year, and find out what she thinks about that.

I have a similar situation. Not married, but have a house. I wanted to apply early, but had only researched my state school at that time. If I would have rushed and applied to other schools based on name I would have wasted a lot of money since many of them were state schools and accept few out of staters. So I was trying not to waste money.

I plan on getting feedback from my state school (as what to do to improve), taking more classes, and applying to more schools next year if I do not get in this year (after doing more research on schools).

Plus it's worth it for me to save $100,000 if I can go to my state school. To me $100,000 is worth taking more classes and waiting another year. I am applying to UNC and have heard that close to 50% of accepted students last year were re-applicants.
