Im a premed (chem major) and will be an incoming sophomore this fall.
Before I email AMCAS, I was wondering whether I would be able to apply to medical school during my junior year (provided I have completed the required courses and have taken my MCAT).

Would medical schools be able to offer me acceptance and allow me to complete my fourth year of undergraduate and as long as maintain a certain GPA?

I wanted to basically see whether I would be able to hold acceptance and just complete my fourth year.

Thanks.

If I understand you correctly what you're saying is that you will submit your apps at the end of your junior year, if so it's not like you will be accepted before you even start your forth year. it's a year long application process many students don't start their interviews till late december or get their rejections/acceptances till may. So basically by the time you start med school you will have your bachelors.

I just noticed are you sure you mean medical school?

because you status says you're pre-dent 😕

If you apply at the end of your junior year, you'll start immediately after graduating from your undergrad.

Sorry to cause confusion. I am really a pre-med, but when I created my username, I stated I was a pre-dent.

I want to apply during my junior year, just like any of you would, send my apps in during the regular application cycle and possibly receive my interviews in January or whenever they are. If I get accepted, then I would wait until I graduate to enter medical school.

My fourth year of undergraduate would just be maintaining a certain gpa since I had already applied and accepted. This would create less stress and help me in applying early.

Is it possible?

Some medical school might ask you to maintain certain gpa, but I really doubt that they will take away your acceptance unless you really mess up your grades (like getting Ds and Fs), from what I've been reading here is once you get the letter your're definitely in.

Ok. Let's break this down. Let's say that you want to start medical school in the fall of 2012. You would apply in the summer of 2011, which would be at the end of your junior year. The process of applying takes a few months and starts in June of every year. Therefore, if you wanted to start after you graduated, you'd apply in June following your Junior year. You cannot apply at the end of your sophomore year.

Basically, the earliest you can apply is the summer before your senior year. During that time, if accepted, you will have to maintain a decent GPA.

to make it easier, here's a timeline for you

sophomore year: get good grades
summer after sophomore year: volunteering, research, traveling, whatever.
Junior Year: continue to get good grades. take mcat
summer after junior year: apply to medical school
senior year: go on interviews, finish applications, wait for decisions, get accepted, get decent grades, graduate
summer after senior year: enjoy
Fall after senior year: start medical school.

hope it clears it up.

edit: answered above.

I'll add that some people finish college in 3 years by taking more credits and follow a similar path to you, but their success tends to be limited as medical schools are reluctant to have a first year matriculate at 19/20. In your case, though, you certainly would not be able to apply sophomore year and then defer to finish your senior year.

The application opens in June.

So, it sounds like what you are saying is that you want to apply in June BEFORE you start your junior year?

The above posters are correct; for most schools you need at least to have junior standing/90 units before you can even apply, even if you have your prereqs done.

Also, keep in mind, you really do need those prereqs to take the MCAT. So assuming you finish them in your sophmore year, you then would have to bust your butt during the summer, take your MCAT after maybe 6 weeks of study to have a competitively-timed application (Your scores take a month to arrive). That doesn't really seem like the smartest idea.

But what you CAN do is finish your prereqs early and then use that extra time to ensure you have a good MCAT score and EC's. Do you really thinkg your EC's will be stellar enough by next June to apply? If you do that's great, I'm just saying.

Edit: Ignore my whole post...Hifey gave an awesome answer.
