Please tell me that they explain all of this stuff you guys are talking about constantly while you are pre-med. I read many of the posts, but usually don't understand the abreviations or language. This is not surprising however, considering I am still in HS, but they must have to explain it all to you in college, right? 😕

nobody comes to you and explains things to you. you have to go out and seek resources. my university had premed advisors, but i didn't go to them b/c i couldn't be bothered. i just looked everything up online. it isn't hard to do.

So basically, you have to learn the whole application process yourself? I'm sure there are probably advisors who help you, but isn't that kind of rough? Having to look all of it up online? Just wondering.

not exactly, but the more initiative you take yourself, the more information you're going to get. have you checked the stickies and FAQ's at the top of the top of the page? those would be a really good place to start.

the entire application process is complex and at times very frustrating, enough so that it would be a REALLY long post if someone really wanted to explain it all.

you're much more likely to get good answers by asking more specific questions... so if you've got any, fire away 😉

All you have to do is follow directions. Things are not handed to you in college like they are in high school. It is all part of growing up. Don't worry 👍

Hey there...I'm a junior in college and I was in the same boat you are in right now about...ehh....2 months ago. I knew NOTHING. It doesn't take that long to get accomodated with how everything works and fits together...what you'll need to get on the MCAT...how to study for it...how to apply....osteopathic vs allopathic... etc etc. It's really good that you're looking into this stuff now, I commend you!

Anyways, since this is your thread now, feel free to ask anything. This forum is pretty damn helpful and I pretty much learned everything from here. I'm really glad one of my friends passed this forum on to me or I'd still be clueless and less willing to take initiative on studying and applying. This site gives me hope that I'll get admitted.

first of all Dr.Cat,

quoting and glorifying "ER" is strictly prohibited here on SDN as it's been found to be total bull**** by our more senior posters.

second of all,

i just wanted to give you a rough time. yeah, most of your answers can be found here. if you're thinking of med school, at this point you should talk with a doc you know and get a feel for if medicine is right for you. then decide what path you want. there are some combined b.s./m.d. programs but that doesn't mean it's right for you. it's a long haul though and you've certainly got alot of time to have a change of heart and realize you don't wanna be a doc.

that's my 1 cent.

Thank you all for the input. As for the ER quotes... gotta love 'em! You know, ER is supposed to be a drama series, but at times, it can be quite funny!

I'm sure I will probably have more questions in the future, but thank you!
🙂

I recommend joining your college's Alpha Epsilon Delta chapter which is an honor society for pre-meds. The meetings can help you a lot with the application process and help you make sure you really want to be a doctor by hainvg guest speakers and getting you involved in volunteer opportunities and shadowing physicians.
