So i'm applying to another job while already working. the people at the new job wants to contact my current group's lead for reference.
isn't there a conflict of interest if my current lead wants to keep me?
I mean if they give a good review im more likely to get other offers and such.

its my first time doing it, not sure if this is just the way it is or is there anyway around it?

Bizarre. They should understand why contacting your current job is problematic. If they do not relent, i would wonder what other hare brained ideas they have at that shop.

Most jobs are willing to accept a supervisor's reference going back to residency or even med school

Your group lead can't say anything untrue about you otherwise they are open to legal repercussions (eg defamation). I wouldnt worry about that aspect of it.

Petty spite in terms of shifts assigned or other duties, well, only you know the risk of that.
