Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone who has any experience could help me out. Thanks!

1. I was wondering what's a normal call schedule an extern takes. I lived at the hospital at the place I externed, and I pretty much took call everyday. However, at other externships, I will probably not be as close, and would be pretty killer to take call everyday. What's a respectable amount of call an extern takes? I don't want to take too little obviously and look lazy. Maybe take call the same interval as the first year residents? Take only face trauma call?

2. I will be doing some more externships during my break between summer and fall. Do i complete my PASS application and then just update it when I do my externships? Do I let the schools know in my application that I am planning on doing these externships, or do I not even finish my application until I do the externships?

3. How many letters of rec do people send? I know the max is four. Should they all be from oral surgeons? Can one of them be from my faculty mentor, since I work with her almost every other day and actually knows me really well?

Thanks 🙂

1. You take call every second of an externship. Always be there. Always be available. Man up for a week. If you ask for a night off, you shouldn't be there.

2. Finish your application as soon as possible. Put in your PASS that you have a scheduled externship and list the dates.

3. We don't care what your general dentist mentor says about you. At my program, if you get 4 letters, all 4 should be from an OMS. If your perio chair writes you a letter, don't even bother showing up. Your program chair and your program director better have letters in there for you.

Good luck.

Can you expand on number 1, please? I have never externed at locations where taking call was available - even when requested. Also, after evening rounds externs were told to go home in the evening. Is this atypical?
Thank you.

Well, if they tell you do go home even after your requested to take call, you could interpret it as one of the following:

1. They mean it with no harm, and you're free to go home.
2. They mean it because you are annoying and they realize you're more of a burden to them.

You certainly don't want to be in the second scenario.

I'm taking the cbse in july. I was wondering if the exam results get automatically uploaded to cbse and if I should submit my pass application before I get my test results. Do the schools even look at the pass application before the cbse?

You have to upload your results yourself.

so i should submit my pass after i upload my cbse right? i would think the oms programs won't even look at my application before i have my cbse scores.

Jeez, no offense but it's getting really painful reading all these threads asking questions such as reporting CBSE scores to programs and number of letters of recommendations. There's been a lot of baby sitting going on here lately. Part of being a good resident is being able to gather information and make a correct, informed decision based on the gathered information. Better get used to it. There's a ton of information out there and a ton of threads that's been made about these specific questions.

Yes, you can send your scores after you submit your PASS.

Your insight may seem basic to you but for those not in-the-know it's difficult to get honest-straight-forward information like you provided to my previous post. This is the kind of stuff that makes message boards so valuable.

It's part of the FAQ on the site where you register for the AAOMS sponsored NBME. That kind of internet searching should be very basic to anyone who is applying.

I wish there were 4 oral surgeons at my school. In the case that there's only one, should I network with surgeons outside of school so that I can get letters from them?

Yea, that's a challenge. You will have to go on several externships and hope that you will be able to get letters of recommendation from the faculty there. Your PPIs don't necessarily have to be from OMFS faculty. Some of mine were from my clinic faculty.
