I was wondering if applying to all three types of schools would potentially hurt my chances of getting in to either type of school. The question might sound stupid but on one of the posts, someone suggested that schools can find out if you applied to other types of schools. So would that put someone who is applying to all three types at a disadvantage?

to give you a preview of the responses to come, podiatric medicine is considerably different than allopathic and osteopathic medicine. also, doing this may cause people to question your true intentions.

apply anywhere you feel like you got a chance...you don't have to explain ur self to no one

It's possible. I will be doing the same thing in a few years.

Airbud, upslegend's goal is probably to get a professional degree and practice some type of medicine.

But what if you apply to a pod school affiliated with an osteopathic school like DMU or AZPOD?

Don't worry explaining this to the air head.....he wont get it!!!!!! Most of the entering classes apply to all types schools including MD, DO, DDS, etc... a good % of the class is there b/c it's there back up plan.....one of the professors at the school told me the stats.....at least for the schools i interviewed at.. But i'm sure it's pretty universal. Half the people in DO schools are there b/c they got rejected or waitlisted to a MD school... this is the nature of the beast... (duces)

Darklord brings up a good point. Back in September when I was applying to AZPod I remember that Midwestern only allows you to apply to 1 of their programs at each branch. You can apply to CCOM and AZCOM if you want since they are on different campuses but you can not apply to both AZCOM and AZPod. I tried to find this on their website but it's been completely redesigned.

I'm not sure about the other schools that have pod + med.

Podiatry is great, but if you are even moderately competitive and want to practice general medicine or anoter specialty, save your money and only apply MD & DO. I bet most people who do pod as backup could easily get into a DO school.

Not to get into this whole debate again, but:
1 - Applying to pod schools is VERY cheap comparatively to applying to DO/MD schools. You could apply to all 8 (now 9) schools without putting much of a dent in your wallet.

2 - I'm not sure if you are implying that ALL people chose pod school as a backup or that there are certain people who do, however this topic has been discussed ad nasuem. Nearly every student who gets accepted to pod school could have gone to DO school or MD school (most likely Caribbean), so never use "the backup plan" excuse. If you want to be an MD or DO CHOOSE to do that. If you want to be a DPM, then CHOOSE to be a DPM.

Agree!

With all due respect "ma'm", I don't think this statement is correct anymore. Now that the stigma towards DO's has been largely lifted I think that over HALF the people in DO school chose to go DO because they A) liked the osteopathic philosophy B) wanted to be a GP and figured the DO degree would put them in the best position to pratice in their desired specialty. Either way its just speculation...I guess I just tend to to take a more optimistic view when it comes to people's intentions.

You and GymMan should get together and consolidate your posts. That way we can cut down the time we waste reading them in HALF

Ur a funny dude:laugh:......read the medical threads and see how many would abandon the DO spot if the MD waitlist calls them.......when i interviewed at the DO schools the students who were interviewing were waiting to hear from MD schools......not all of them but a good %😛

That makes a little bit more sense because MDs and DOs end up doing the same sorts of things. Both groups can apply for a lot of the same residency positions when they're done with school. Podiatry on the other hand is a different beast entirely. We begin to specialize from day 1, we have our own boards, our own residencies, and we all know we're going to end up practicing podiatry. The jump between MD to DO seems logical to me, but to go from either of them to podiatry is something else entirely.

I got into every MD school I applied to, including a top 5 school and chose to do podiatry.

Once you're in podiatry, you'll understand why.

I would also venture to guess that probably 4/5 students in my class could also have gotten into MD schools should they have wanted to. Everyone has different career goals in mind. I do regret how much I spent on the AMCAS application though 🙁

Also as far as I'm concerned, there's no difference between an MD and a DO. From a surgical management perspective, there's no difference between an MD and a DPM

DMU also only allows you to apply to one of their schools (DO vs. DPM)

It is posts like this that allow me to sleep at night; well said 👍👍👍👍👍

Don't forget to add WesternU to the list of pod schools affiliated with DO programs; however, I don't know if there is a restriction regarding application to both DO & DPM programs there.
