Applying to programs on probation

I'm sure I'm not the only one to get a letter from a certain Midwest program last week stating that they are on probation. So, how bad is it to interview and rank there? I know my home surgery program is on probation for mostly 'silly' things like administrative work hour stuff. At least 10 people I know that could go anywhere still really want to go to our surgery program on probation. What about gas? They won't just shut down will they? I know that the program in question is a university and uses no CRNA's whatsoever. I assume then that shutting down the gas residency would be unbelieveable in terms of OR time!

They won't just shut down the program, but consider the reasons that the program was placed on probation (Workload overload, insufficient/absent training in subspecialty areas, etc.). Those problems may become your problems when it comes time for you to be certified.

It would be very unusual for a University program on probation to subsequently shutdown. The only programs that I ever heard shutting down in any specialty are small community programs that generally were not committed to resident education.

Anyone here familiar with King-Drew Hospital in LA County? They recently were forced to shut down their residency programs (all of them I believe) for several reasons, none of which I am familiar with the specifics on. I believe they were placed on probation last year before being shut down this year. They are a major hospital, not some small community hospital.

Maybe someone else knows more details about the program and would like to share but I believe that those current residents now have to find new residency programs.

That would really suck. Look up more info on how it happened to King-Drew and maybe you'll see what's possible in terms of residency programs being on probation and being shut down.

you are right MLK is not a small community hospital it is a dalipidated county hospital, but it did share similarities with all programs that get shut down. The residents have a very low board passing rate, get very little teaching and are used basically as scutmonkeys. From what i understand only their radiology and surgery programs are being shutdown. Their neonatal fellowship has also been recommended to lose accredidation

I read that only one surgical resident was able to pass his written surgical boards last year. The radiologists I have come across (5-6 six of them) all of them could not pass their boards on the first attempt and many remain uncertified after several attempts.

King/Drew is still interviewing for this years match for Anesthesia postions at least. So i know all of thier programs are not shut down but i do think all are on probation at least. I would stay away from this one b/c the problems there seem widespead and deep involving the hospital and all the residency programs. I live in Cali and this past summer it was all over the newspapers that they were about to close the hospital due to lack of funding and poor patient care.

Are you referring to the University of Oklahoma program? I think they've been on probation for some time now.
