applying to UNC from out of state

I am getting prepared to apply to dental school in May. I go to the university of michigan and have above a 3.8 GPA. I got a 19 on my DAT though. How hard will it be for me to get into UNC as an out of stater? I have a lot of shadowing and volunteering, though...a pre-health club, pre-dental club...have shadowed dentists in their offices, at the dental school, volunteered at a non-profit dental clinic, i volunteer at Hospital Dentistry at the U of M hospital, did SMDEP after my freshman year of college, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and other various volunteer experiences ... Would these be enough for the admissions commity to be more lenient about my DAT score and still consider me? And in general would I be a competive applicant even though my DAT is a 19?

I think you have a chance, but why not study and take it again? You still have plenty of time...

UNC is a state school so their out of state applicants need to be extremely high to be noticed and considered. Your GPA is fine but you might want to really think about taking the DAT again if UNC is your top choice. While a 19 and a 20 are only one point apart, it can make the world of difference on your acceptance/denial.

I had an inty there this year and im international. if you think you can make your dats better go for it. but research is one thing that they really seem to like there (chapel hill = research town) so try to get some of that on your application, even if it means volunteering your time in a lab.

It's notoriously difficult to get accepted out-of-state to UNC, but anything's possible... UNC heavily weighs the interview (it's 40% of your application). Supposedly there are people who have gotten into Harvard, but not UNC out-of-state. DAT/GPA is 30%, and extracurriculars (ECs), leadership, research, dentistry experience, etc. accounts for the last 30%.

Like others have already said, your GPA is excellent, your ECs seem good (except for the absence of research), but your DAT score could be your Achilles heel.

I have a friend that got in as out of state with pretty much the same stats. Of course he was originally from NC and lost his residency status during undergrad (they wouldn't let him keep his residency, it was weird). In his interview he explained that to them, and he knew of a very underserved, rural county in NC that he wanted to move to and practice after dental school. He has every intention of doing so, and I think that might have helped his cause as an out-of-state student.
