Moving states for application - Worth it or too obvious?

Hi folks,

I currently live in a state with very few in-state schools. I have an opportunity to move to another state, with way more schools (that I also would love to go to) in time for my intended application timeframe (12 months in-state residency).
My question is, my postbacc institution will be very obviously from my original state...in your opinion, will it reflect poorly to look like I moved specifically to have in-state residency?

IMO, it will only reflect poorly if all you do is move and not get immersed in community service opportunities in your new home.

Just aim for your whatever state school is in your current state. My state only had one state school and I put everything into attending that school. If your state doesn't have one, I'd do anything to prevent paying OOS tuition or private school tuition.

Well, I figured if I moved, I hurt my chances with one school but boost it with at least 4 others. I am not particular on where I go right now, so this strategy seemed to be a net positive for me.

Some of the schools in my target state are also private which should mean they're agnostic to applicant residency status, but will still show higher acceptance rates for in-state applicants; is this just an artefact of self selection bias where most applicants are going to be more local, or does residency still play a part for private schools?

I wouldn't recommend applying to any private schools. You're looking at 500k+ at most private schools these days which isn't worth it at all. Be confident enough in yourself with your state school, and if you don't get in, dentistry isn't worth ruining your finances over.
