One of my friends is considering pre-med, and is also considering creating his own major, and is (lo and behold) considering doing both. He told me it was going to consist of an array of science, engineering, philosophy, and economics courses and that he'd be taking enough science to be able to satisfy the pre-med reqs. How do medical schools treat this? I've been curious to know myself.

I had no idea people could create their own majors.

I don't think they'd care as long as he did well in his prereqs and on the MCAT.

I'm sure it's fine. If it works for his undergrad institution then it should work for the med schools too. People do a "create you own" in Neurology at my school all the time. It might give them something to talk about during interviews.

THAT IS SO COOL....... I am so excited for this person.....

as long as the one year of gen bio, chem, orgo, and physics is done with a GPA of 3.6 +, MCAT 30+ there should be no problem I think.

It is an excellent way to combine humanities and sciences... Take a lot of humanities courses that interest you and take it with the prereq's.... just an awesome idea...

it can only help in med school admissions, as it shows a student is able to do well in the sciences AND humanities AND is able to construct a curriculum focused on one's interests/needs

created majors are called interdisciplinary studies
some more common at my school are
medical ethics
biophysics
astrophysics

im considering one to combine history + psychology( primarily social) + philosophy + my pre-med program and a few higher level bio classes
