A friend of mine is a 4th year IMG, US citizenship, however attended medical school in Poland. He has done all of his rotations in the US and has been desperatly trying to set up an away EM rotation at a site with an EM residency program. His school does have an affiliation with a site with an AOA EM program. Should he not be able to set up a rotation at a site with an ACGME EM program, would a letter from this program suffice? I wonder with the merger that's in the works if that changes anything.

I don't think the merger actually goes into affect for another few years (2018 I believe), so that probably won't have any influence on this.

I rotated/hands-on observed with a physician that is a part of the EM faculty, but the hospital where he works is not connected with an EM residency program( he works at two hospitals). Can he write me an SLOE? I am an IMG...

No.

Also, to the OP, I didn't read closely - graduates from non-COCA accredited programs aren't eligible to match at AOA programs, so even if s/he were able to rotate at an AOA EM place, they wouldn't be able to match there.

Oh I am applying to ACMGE programs...Does that make a difference?

The AOA comment was directed to @igcgnerd.

For your situation, the answer is still no. You need to be evaluated in the context of an EM residency, against other senior medical students, by EM residency faculty. This is how the SLOE is "standardized," more or less. Sorry I didn't have more positive info. You could still get a LOR from your faculty for the time you did invest.

Thank you for the answer 🙂
So if I understand right, I could still get a SLOE as an IMG if I would somehow get a rotation in a hospital that is connected with the residency program?

Absolutely! There is certainly not a "no SLOEs for IMG" rule that I am aware of. The harder part may be finding such a rotation at this time of year.

Thanks! I will try to match this year without SLOEs and if it doesn't work out, I will try to find a rotation in the upcoming year... I am persistent so hopefully I will get lucky eventually 🙂
Thank you so much racerwad for your help! All the best!
