Actually Orson is a proper noun as in Mork calling Orson from Robin Williams's show.

In light of some recent events I believe it would be good to have a discussion on how those seeking professional schooling, licensure and or credibility should act on the internet.

First I would say that as a rule of thumb, you should not be "acting" on the internet. Do not have a persona, and carry yourself how you would in a room full of strangers. It's important to always speak in context to the discussion you are having. For instance, sarcasm is often acceptable in conversation so long as it is not facetious and within some relevance to the topic. To not do so is considered trolling.

Anonymity- is this truly possible on the internet?

One way or another, the most randomest of threads seemed to be dug up this weekend. I guess that the main goal in medicine, as in real life is to:

This thread needed to be revived why?

but a haha thumbs up is your way of...what? sad display gentlemen /women. 👎

Can't say I get your point here.

But kudos for the thread resurrection. This is a decent topic to re-address from time to time.

So, your homework is read my comments from this thread and, if you have any specifics you want to point out or discuss, feel free.

I general, my thoughts on the subject are:

-if you make threats or are racially insensitive online, that is justifiable for a medical school to rescind an acceptance. So, no injustice was done against the young man.

-people make mistakes, and can change for the better, so I hope he gets another shot. This doesn't mean the consequences shouldn't happen.

-when you make a mistake online, it's a bad idea to go back online and complain about it. It shows that you lack remorse and only fell self pity. This was what happened in this case.

Anyway, I also feel like its OK to have strong opinions and to stand up to intent bullies (or bullies in real life). I remember people were very timid for a while after this incident, which is harmful to the potential for the expression of honest thoughts and exchanging various ideas on important topics. The social aspect of SDN will always be here, but I always thought the best parts about this place was the information, and the forum that gives a voice to anyone with a computer. It's then up to the group to value any idea expressed based on its own merit and not any rank, gender or other bias that might exist in person.
