APRIL MCATers Club!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the explanation. It turns out that we just reviewed Conservation of Mechanical Energy today in our MCAT prep class. Wow, it's much easier than kinematics. I can't believe I don't remember any of this from undergrad physics.

Where's tweety? she/he has been gone for while now? Keeep coming with the questions everyone!!!

Schoolboy, are you going to take the test again? Don't tell that you don't get any acceptance because of you PS section. It's still kind of early, let's hope you get the good news very soon.
It's very awful to go through the mcat and the application process again.

bentz,

I didn't apply this year. I got fed up with the AMCAS situation while I was filling out the AMCAS app and decided to improve my application this year. Physics is my strong subject - it just seems very intuitive to me, so don't let that intimidate you. Besides, I didn't know the answer to that problem until I looked up the answer. :D

Now gchem and ochem I hate...

Could you explain that physics question? And I thought I got the projectile motion concept down.
Thanks.•••••Just another method: PE=mgh (where m=mass, g=gravity, h=height). Given the PE, m, and assuming g=~10m/s, solve for h.

Then use the equation:
(final velocity)^2=(initial velocity)^2 - 2ax

where a=acceleration (in this case, a=g, since we're working in the y-dimension) and x=h. Solve for initial velocity.

Hey everyone, i really just wanted to wish you guys luck. I'm a junior and took the mcat last summer just to get it out of the way and I ended up improving my score from a 6v 8P 8B to a 11V 10P 12B and an R. I took Kaplan, but the classes weren't the help, its taking as many damn practice tests as you can. Seriously, all you have to do is force yourself to take every imaginable test you can get your hand on. Your score will go up, and you will do good. I promise.

OK, I just got ExamKrackers for Physics. It's definitely a better read than Kaplan, but I still finish each chapter thinking I understand, and then proceed to miss every question on the test. Get this--I get all the answers right on waves, electromagnetism and optics (all the stuff from Physics II, which I've not taken!!!), but if it involves projectile motion, inclined planes, torque, springs or gravity, I always pick the wrong answer. What's wrong with me?!!!

Hello everyone.. I just wanted to say that this post is really helping me out...keep these questions (as well as the answers;) coming..
I got waitlisted last year and am taking this year off, taking the April mcats (sighhhh....) and re-applying for 2003. I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this question:its probably really simple, but I hate these friction questions and get confused on them,..anyway, here it is:
A student-cart of mass 100kg is accelerated at .8m/s^2 by the falling mass system that supplies a horizontal force of 90N to a cord attached to the front of the cart. What is the friction force opposing the motion?
a--3N
b--10N
c--60N
d--90N

The answer is B

F=M*A

F=100kg * .8 m/s = 80N

Supplied - friction = observed
90 - x = 80

x= 10 N

Thanks for the answer :) I kinda figured it out
after I took a long break .. sometimes you need
to get away from all this B.S before you can get back to it with a clear head!

you guys can discuss your feeling about the the Saturday and Sunday for both Kaplan and Princeton here. where's tweety? we have about a week and half to get ready for test. keep the motivations coming?

listen, please provide an answer to my question. I want to buy some practice verbal passages. I don't know which one fewer mistake and ask their questions in the same format as the MCAT or AMCAS' materials. Please help guys!!!!!!!!!

I took the MCAT in '98 with 33-O (13V 11B 9P). Those scores have expired, so I'm retaking it this spring. From what I've seen so far, the ExamKrackers series is closest to the MCAT format. Te questions are trickier, and they've zeroed in really well on the things that are actually tested. It's also more entertaining, which is the only way I am getting through it. I didn't get their Verbal prep book, but if you practice on the LSAT and GRE verbal sections (for which there are far more materials available), you will be well prepared for anything the MCAT might throw at you.

As for me, I completely lost my composure over the Physical Science section (which is second), and I know that neither the Bio or the writing score is what it would have been had that not happened. I have no doubt that even the verbal would have suffered, had the section been after PS. So those of you who are struggling with verbal--the very first section--I really feel for you.

Again, your best bet is to study GRE and LSAT verbal sections. Particularly LSAT--those are the hardest, and the MCAT will NOT be more difficult than that.

thanx Samoa. I can't believe you let those scores expired on you without applying. I guest you will do good again because you score spreat out fairly well. Maybe you need put more effort on the physical sscience section. by the way, how did you practice for verbal. Go ahead and rock this test in April!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I did apply, though. And apply. And apply. But my undergraduate grades suck, and I'm going nowhere until I do something about it. I've been taking classes part time while working full time, for the last couple years or so, and my post-bacc GPA is good (3.85). So my best hope now is to blow doors on the MCAT this time, and give the adcoms one less thing to find fault with.

To be honest with you, I didn't really study for the verbal section. I had taken the GRE and the LSAT years before, and their verbal sections were structured exactly the same way.

It's a dirty little secret about standardized tests, that they measure their ability to measure a skill based on how well their scores correlate with other tests purporting to test that same skill. So any test claiming to test verbal reasoning is going to be very similar in nature to any other test that also claims to test verbal reasoning. Who really knows what they're testing??? All we know is that they're testing the same thing.

here's an ad :) . I have 3 copies of the AAMC Practice test IV and solutions. Willing to sell for $25 bucks each for one set, vs the $40 AAMC charges. These are questions from old MCAT exams, so if anyone wants the extra practice, PM me! AAMC IV is in a grouping that's relevant for the 2002 MCAT exams.

woooohooooo, I'm baaaa-aack. You guys won't believe what i have been upto...sigh...I am in love!
Now I know that this is the wrong time to fall in love, yet i have been studying...for the last 3 weeks..well, sorta! :) At any point, I need to come down from the clouds and get my butt to MCAT studying again. Do you guys realize how little time we have? I have finished reading all my material, but I have a lot of practise stuff to do. Do you guys think I am behind? Gosh, I feel guilty now for not having studied for the last 2 weeks. Time to get the screws in my brain oiled, I guess!!

Happy Studying..happy life..all is good. :)

Tweetie

welcome back tweety. we all miss you. I guest we'll have more questions now. keep'em coming tweety

Somoa, if you don't mind me asking how bad was bad for your undergrad gpa. I would think that mcat would even out most gpa's unless it was under 3.0? I am curious to know what your gpa was...

In case this hasn't been announced yet, you can post all your MCAT questions on this bboard: www.examkrackers.com/forum

They have sections on all the AAMC material, i.e. the practice tests and practice items, so post away! It's a great resource..

I'm currently taking their course. Good luck everyone!

Tweetie, I'm in the same boat. I've finished all my "reviewing" except bio, and now I just really have to sit down and consolidate my info, and practice. I think we still have plenty of time! I'm taking all of next 2 weeks off work so I can have time to do some practice questions, and will do some stuff this weekend. The friday before, hopefully I'm going shopping :)

I have a question for all of you preparing for April Mcat.
How many of you are not scoring what you want to score on the Mcat and are still taking the mcat in april. Iam so confused Iam not scoring well at all and I took mcat last august so this is my second attempt .Iam thikning of taking test in august now .I dont want to get the same low score again but I want to apply for next years class .
Any body else in same boat ...Any suggestion?

I thought this was dead b/c everyone is paranoid about this exam, I guess people are still at it.

I guess I will find out this Sat where I currently am. It's our first diagnostic in about a month (it will be AAMC V) but I 'm on target for the score I want (close anyway).

I, too, am going shopping Fri, I do not intend to study on Fri at all (well maybe a peek or two at most), instead I need to buy clothes for my big night out Sat night!

now that we only have 16 days left, what are you guys doing or focusing on the most.

Unless you're taking the Sunday test, there are only 15 more days. I'm doing practice problems up the ass.

PS: Don't take Berkeley Review Practice Test #8. It is HELL.

maybe u guys will get a kick out of this. i'm keeping an online journal about, the days until the mcat. it's not all about the mcat (i'm not that neurotic), but I thought it might comforting to know that other ppl are going through the same sort of thing. alot of it is random crap in my head.

www.timewarp.net/~bonnie/mcat.html

We're almost done with all the material in my mcat course (examkrackers). I'll be reviewing bio, well I guess everything really. The week of the test, I'll be doing mostly problems, and reviewing weak areas. One thing that has worked for me is to priortize what to study based on how likely it will be on the test. i.e. don't waste a whole day trying to understand a concept that might only be 1 question. There are def. topis that re-appear frequently, so I'm looking at those. Just my 2 cents.

welp, just took 2/3 of AAMC 5 and it just goes to confirm how hard Berkeley Review #8 is. I think I got 25 on BR #8, I have almost that same score doing two sections of AAMC 5. I was getting pretty damn frustrated for a while. Now I feel much better. :)

I don't care what I get on the freakin' thing anymore. I just want to be done. I want my normal life back. I've pretty much reviewed everything. I'm now spending the next 2 weeks consolidating and practicing up my ass.

MCAT April 20th, and then three midterms the following week. It just doesn't end...

I am so friggin' tired of this whole thing. It's like this tremedous weight on you all the time. What I love is that I have a major Orgo II exam (over alcohols, aldehydes/ketones, epoxides, and carboxylic acids) on Thursday April 18th. Weee!!! That'll be a blast!

I'm taking AMCAS 6 tomorrow through TPR. I'll let ya'll know how it goes....
