Get a master's degree in medical microbiology, and then go run a clinical lab.

ID is just about the least competitive field in medicine. There is no need to go to a top 20 school for that except to stroke your own ego. If you maintain grades like you have earned so far and do well on the MCAT you should be able to get into a US med school comfortably.
P.S. it's also one of the lowest paid specialties.

I guess there's no logical reason. I worked my butt of in highschool and got into some really good unis but had to go to my state school for financial reasons. Part of me thinks I owe it to myself to be able to go to a school that I'm really proud of?

Trust me, the only thing you'll be proud of when it's all said and done is how fast you can get out from underneath your loans.

I suggest reevaluating your mindsets regarding a “school you can be proud of.” The unfortunate reality is 60% of applicants fail to gain admission every year. Medical school isn’t undergrad where there are several thousand schools. With so few medical schools there isn’t really a bad program.

OP, understand that medicine (like many other careers), is a big life decision that requires immense dedication and sheer will. Don't get into it simply on the basis of respect, money (real estate is where the real $$$ is anyway...), pride, or parental approval. You'll be miserable everyday at work if those are the reasons. Do what YOU love, and love what YOU do... 😉
If ID is truly what you want to do, then go for it. But bear in mind that getting into a T20 isn't the end all be all. There are MANY schools that aren't T20 with very respectable programs that may even be more suited to YOUR particular liking. Attending a medical school is on its own something to be proud of, regardless of "ranking". 🙂
