I live in NY and I am interested in a FP residency program in Virginia. Is it a bad thing if I just apply while doing my clerks and electives in NY? Do I have to do an away elective in VA? I know it would be better to do that, but can I be accepted in a residency program within the UVA system without having a completed elective there?

Help!

FP is wide open. With the exception of maybe 5 programs nationwide, most all programs are happy to get even FMG's in the scramble when it comes down to it. There are not enough US grads interested in FP. Virginia to my knowledge has no special FP residencies that really outshine the rest of the country, so I am pretty sure if you just communicate with them by email and show your interest in a letter this year before applications for next year, you will be fine.

Thanks,

I've already done that, so I guess I'm ahead of the game? I just hate letting my type A personality show by pestering the residency people over at UVA.

Now, here is my next issue: I am really interested in this osteopathic program in NY. I have been in contact with the DME since MS1, and now I'm MS3. Because of the program in UVA, I may have to turn down any osteopathic residency spot I get so that I can be elidgable for the Allo match.

I have heard some talk about just applying for the osteo internship during pgy1, and then applying for the allo residency in pgy 2. But would I be in the same situation, or will I be able to choose one over the other during pgy2? I don't care about having to do pgy1 over again if i go allo. I am obviously confused, but glad that someone got back to me on this.

Any takers? Please?!

Which 5 programs are you referring to? Are there programs that are not DO friendly?

Thanks🙂

There is no good reason to repeat your intern year when you get the program you want right off the bat. There are no DO unfriendly FP programs!! Even the top programs are littered with DO's. I know many people that stay at their DO school to do an intern year and then move on to a PGY2 position in an allo program. You just have to hope though that the program you are looking for will have PGY2 slots when you want one, because most eventually fill all their PGY1 slots and rarely lose someone. Good luck.

Thanks PAC,

That makes alot of sense actually. I think I know what I have to do now.
