Are "distinction tracks" in medical school worth the effort?

The school I am most likely going to attend has several different tracks that students can choose to complete (e.g. Research, Medical Education/Teaching, Humanities, etc). Do these distinctions have any kind of impact once residency applications roll around? Obviously having research experience is important, and doubly so for the competitive specialties, but does this extra designation have an impact?

From what I have read, they don't have any real impact aside from what you accomplish while you are in them. If you completed a took on a scientific project for the research track or started a large community educational outreach program for medical education/teaching, that is what matters to PDs, not the mere fact you were in one.
