Are DO students almost guaranteed a residency spot somewhere?

So I came upon these stats regarding AOA residency spots post match

2017 Summary by Program Type

There are actually 100s of unfilled spots post match which seem s pretty crazy. Does this mean if I fail to get anything in the ACGME I have nice backups waiting for me? I'm a 4th year

Or do all these unfilled AOA spot get filled up during the month between AOA and ACGME matches?

How fast would these positions fill up in the AOA scramble?

I am applying for FM but would gladly take IM or neurology or something if it means having a bird in the hand.

There are spots left every year, not all get filled, even via scramble

Man that news makes my day.

So in my case I failed the humanistic part of PE

Do they take applicants with black marks?

Say if I fail my retake can I still try to scramble without a passing score?

You will have to have a passing score in order to graduate medical school however.

I have 469 level 1 comlex
pe level failed first attempt but pass on second attempt
level 2 CE failed 1st attempt and have yet to attempt retake
otherwise good student without class failures excellent LOR from ivy leagues and faculties from across US.
will I be able to scramble without CE passing score?

So 2 ortho and 2 derm spots spots go unfilled? Well, how you doin' residency ;-)
For the sarcastically inept, there are instances in PDs eyes where an empty spot is better than a subpar candidate, possibly like in the case of the poster above. Take home point: open spots don't guarantee anything.

CS is not a requirement for graduation at my school, but I am sure it's a requirement for state licensure. Therefore, you need to pass CS in order to start residency.

Another thing to be aware of.... some AOA/ACGME accredited programs still match AOA first, but then open up the remaining unfilled positions for the ACGME match and will allow IMG's to fill them in. Are you skipping the AOA match to apply ACGME then only resort to AOA scramble for backup?

Didnt think you could get a spot unless you passed comlex 1 and 2

It will be hard for a program to offer you a spot without a CE pass, because they know you need it to graduate and you can't start at a program without it. If I were you, I would focus on studying as much as possible and taking the CE when you're ready. Once you have the pass, it will be easier to search for a program. Then at that point you can try to scramble into one of the open TRI, FM or IM programs. You should still contact programs after the match either way, just in case, but changes are that most won't offer you a spot until you have a pass on the CE.

Derm Spots: Larkin Community Hospital, South Miami, FL (1) and South Texas Osteopathic Dermatology, Houston, TX (1)

Ortho Spots: McLaren Oakland in Pontiac, MI (1) and idk where the other one is.

Definitely not the worst places to do residency 😛

Location maybe. I've heard of a lot of bad things about Larkin from many different people. No idea about the other two, but I suspect there's a reason those Derm and Ortho spots didn't fill.

You’ve clearly never been to pontiac then...

Lol jk, McLaren Oakland is a solid hospital and theres plenty of nice places to live just outside of pontiac

890 unmatched. How many new schools in past 4 years? 750 new seats last year alone?

Its going to start getting extremely competitive.

How many of them were D.Os? and was this a huge increase from last year?
