Hello all,
I was wondering if it is worse to have interviews later in the season. For example if given the choice between November or January, will interviewing later negatively impact me?
Are students who interview later placed lower on the rank list because the good spots are "filled up" ???
Thank you!

There's no disadvantage to interviewing later.

There's no difference. If you interview my last day, and I want to rank you #1, I just rank you #1 and that's all. I build my rank list on Excel and I can move anyone around easily. SPots don't "fill up".

The only problem with interviewing at the end of the season is a travel problem. Let's say there's a huge snowstorm and you can't get there. Now there isn't time to reschedule your interview. Some programs MIGHT offer you a Skype type interview, but you'd still not get to see the program at all.

aPD......so after the interview invitation the playing field is more or less leveled for everyone that attends, and the rank is built mostly from the interview? I have read the nrmp report which ranked the interaction/interview vs boards grades AOA etc.

It all factors in to some degree. For some programs the interview is the primary focus and the academics a more minor consideration, and for some it's academics with the interview serving as validation that personalities fall somewhere within the spectrum of "normal". But a strong candidate who interviews well will get ranked highly whether the interview is scheduled for the first day, the last day, or somewhere in between.

Agreed. Chances are programs will still rank you based upon your whole application. But now your interview is the one piece you have control over.
