are metals basic or acidic in general? how about for non-metal and transtional metals?

Is there a periodic trend to determine whether an element is acidic or not? Thanks!

the more to the left it is, the more basic it is, so an alkali metal would be more basic than an alkali earth

Think about the acid as in lewis definition- they are electron acceptor and bases are electron donors. So from left to right in the period, electronegetivity (desire for electrons) increases so acidity increases. That's why most acids contain non-metal elements.
