i want to complete undergrad at cuny hunter since it is much more affordable and easy to commute. will nyu or even stonybrook dental schools look down on this? are my chances slimmer? should I go to another college instead? also, can I have a little under a 4.0 to get into either dental school?

go to hunter -> buffalo

the fact youre considering nyu, prob means you don't have the numbers for stony brook.

stony brook > buffalo/columbia > .......................................................... > nyu

(im talking bout debt and specialization..nyu's a good school only if you're not paying for it)

No you need a >4.0 to get into dental school. also you need to take both the mcat and step 1 before taking the DAT.

people like this seriously give SDN a bad rep.

I heard that nyu is not such a great dental school but its my dream school and I live pretty close so I figured if I do undergrad at a cuny itll save me money that way I wont be in twice the debt. but I have a question, is stonybrook harder to get into than nyu? also, why do I have to take the mcat why not just the DAT??

I went to a cuny and it didn't affect me from getting multiple interviews, acceptances, and into my dream school.

Just do well in your coursework and DAT.

sarcasm

i don't get it. you want to save $15,000 so you can have $400,000 in debt???

nope not what I meant I wouldn't want to do all 8 years at nyu. undergrad and dental school, then I would be $600,000+ in debt.

You don't want to be $600k in debt but you're okay with being $450k+ in debt? Back to original Q, no I went to cuny and I'm getting multiple interview invites.

youre right but I guess i just look at it as the less debt the less time ill spend paying off the loans and interest. And if you don't mind me asking, what cuny did you go to??

Brooklyn and don't go there, the science curriculum is ridiculously difficult.

I'm butting in with a slightly different perspective, but I am going to a undergraduate institution that is almost completely unknown (literally, there are probably lots of people in my state who haven't even heard of my school) and am doing just fine. However, since I wanted to make adcoms knew my grades were legit even though I don't go to a research institution, I made sure my DAT scores backed them up.

Prettyangel, I know that NYU is your dream school, and it's hard to discount that. However, the debt you would incur at NYU is almost crippling. Please, please don't subject yourself to that if you don't have to. You can deal with 4 years at a school that isn't exactly "perfect" if it means you will have it much easier for MANY years thereafter.

Or, go into the military. If you're up for it, that's a pretty sweet deal.

Lottery tickets are also a suggestion.

thanks for the heads up! i was going to go to ccny but i read that their science is ridiculous too.

I go to a cuny as well and interviewed at NYU recently, so no I don't think going to a cuny will prevent you from getting into dental school.

What school you go to honestly doesn't matter. The only time it WILL matter is if you are applying for a very prestigious school like Harvard or you and another applicant with the same everything are being compared where only your school is different. But that is practically impossible and will never happen. Go to the school that makes the most sense to you, whether that is financial practicality or social or whatever. Don't go to a school just because the 'name' might be a little better and then end up receiving a low GPA.
