Hi everyone,

I am going into my 4th year of my undergraduate degree (biochemistry), and I am applying for admission to optometry schools for sept. 2013.
I have a GPA of 3.7 (on a 4.0 scale) and a resume that is a mile long with volunteer experience. I am also employed as a full-time summer student at an optometry clinic, and have done volunteer work at other optometry clinics. My school of choice is the University of Waterloo, since I'm from Canada, but I am also going to apply to some schools in the U.S.
I thought that my chances of getting accepted were pretty good.... until i wrote the OAT.

My scores were:
QR 330
RC 330
BIO 320
CHEM 350
OCHEM 280
PHY 310
TS 310
AA 320

Some scores are ok, but organic really brought me down. I'm thinking about taking it again in the fall, since the deadline for many schools is not until next spring (although i'll miss my shot at Waterloo since their deadline is July 31st..). But I was just wondering if my current scores, along with my GPA and extracurriculars, are competitive at all?
Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated!!!!

You'll be alright. The 280 is low, but overall you did fine. If schools give you a hard time just re-take the OAT and hit 300 everywhere. A 330 is competitive, so is. 3.7.

I believe you will have to contact the schools. I know that Waterloo is one of the competitive optometry schools. I believe there OAT scores are like 350+. Canadian education is harder compared to the states. Sorry, I couldn't be that helpful.

If you're aiming for Waterloo than I'm certain you're going to have to retake.

In general for the states you should be fine because of your GPA but I think for the more competitive schools, you might want to retake (most likely able to do better).

I just took my OAT this morning.

Bio: 310
Gen Chem: 320
O Chem: 360
Physics: 270
TS: 310
AA: 320

Given my 3.3 GPA, where do you think I can get accepted? I really want to go to Indiana; what are my chances there? Does my 270 on physics doom me?

Unfortunately, I believe Waterloo requires above 300 in every section.
Other than that, your GPA and experiences are definitely competitive enough 🙂
