I was at the Walgreens pharmacy today and I called a technician look-a-like "mister." Turns out he was the pharmacist on staff over their. He looked and me and said that's 'doctor' to you son. I was just wondering how someone who stands behind a counter all day can call him/herself a doctor.

Well, if the pharmacist has received a PharmD degree, then it would be appropriate to call him doctor. I don't see the humor in your wonderment. 🙄

I think a better fit would be "drug-dealer"

And I was just wondering how someone who has never been to graduate school can call him/herself "doctor." Maybe instead of calling the diagnosors "doctors" we should start calling them by their profession so that the real doctors (Ph.D.s) can finally have the word to themselves. So from now on when I call the guy who owns the family practice down the street, I will address him as "Physician Yoak." The guy that looks at my teeth will now be "Dentist Powers." 😉

Then can we call the original poster "Mister Troll"? Oh wait, that's backwards... 😉

You guys are not going to become doctors. Stop pretending that you're something you're not

I'm a troll because I speak the truth? You will not become a doctor in any sense of the word

I have to agree with the OP. Pharmacists don't deserve to call themselves doctors.

No, you're a troll because you registered 4 days ago and already have over 100 posts. You've been posting mostly in the everyone forum and the lounge, and trying to get attention by posting things like "I shaved my crotch". You have a few posts in the pre-dental and dental forums, but it seems that you are just a born-again troll since you know people that have been around for a while. And it seems that you're upset that you will never become a "real" doctor either:

why I chose dental school...

...because medical school rejected me 🙁

As a matter of fact you'll never become any kind of doctor since you don't even know the difference between "their" and "there."

Like we don't know that you ARE the OP. 🙄 As a matter of fact, you probably are briansle too, since "he" also posts in the pre-dental forum, and registered on May 8th.

Ask for an IP check, I am not the OP. Anyway, how dare you attack me because I stated an opinion that contrasted with yours? I really don't think that Pharmacists can call themselves doctors. :thumbsup

It doesn't matter what you think. Pharmacists are allowed to call themselves doctors because they will have earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. We DO NOT call ourselves physicians because we are not physicians.

Most pharmacists choose to have their patients and coworkers call them by their first names because they're not pretenious super egos.

This was your first post on SDN!!! You registered today just to say this? I highly doubt it. Usually people join this site to ask for help from fellow applicants from whatever program. It takes a while before they get bored and start trolling around in the other forums. And HELLO, your new screen name is screaming for attention in itself.

I'm done playing private investigator for today. I have better things to do.

You know pharmacy people are usually fairly laid back... nothing like pre-med... but DAGGONE they are really trying our patients.....

patience too! 😀

I have a funny story...

My first few days at my last job before med school (in a hospital pharmacy), one of the male clinical pharmacists kept eying me every time he would walk through the pharmacy. Finally he walked over to introduce himself. He shook my hand and said, "hi, I'm <firstname>." Then one of the technicians piped up, "That's Doctor <lastname>." So I smiled and replied, "well, my name is Samoa, but that'll be Doctor Samoa to you." :meanie: Definitely won over all the guys in the room. Hee hee. 😀

The funny thing was, I think he actually had gone to med school before pharmacy school. I never did get a straight story out of him on that point. But that just makes the whole story even more ironic (although you'd have to know more about the situation to appreciate the irony).

I don't know who combinator is, but this guy is not me. I don't have a problem with pharmacy and its a great and smart career choice for the current times.
I just have a problem with people like surgical who play this name calling game. I never disrespected anyone in this forum, I wasn't the one who started the insults, and all of sudden surgical calls me a "punk". Who's the one that's immature?

You DID disrespect people on this forum. People went out of their way to answer your questions and help you, and you responded with this? 😕

THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SAY THIS WHOLE TIME!! I already knew that. Stop restating the obvious.
Maybe you were just being sarcastic, but that's hard to get across over the internet. But you are wrong in thinking that the pharmacy profession is low-stress or that pharmacy school is easier to get into than dental school. I think that you have doubts that you can get into dental school; well I'll bet you won't get into pharmacy school either.

Another reason I figured that you might be the newest troll is because someone who has a problem using "there" and "their" properly probably also has a problem using "your" and "you're" properly also, as follows:

Pretty embarrassing, having go to school all those years and people will think your bagging groceries.
briansle said:
Maybe if I was old I would see walgreens and savons as pharmacies, so I guess your right.
briansle said:
Ok, surgical, since your so tough, tell me where your at.

I'll tell you where you can find me. Unless your too chicken.

Give it up already!

It is just not a common practice to call pharmacists "doctors". When somebody tells you that he is ?a doctor? you usually don?t even think about asking ?which doctor?. So when they call themselves ?doctors?, it is like making a statement in a way. Which really sounds funny to me. As funny as when they call Martin Luther King "Dr. King". Which is O'K, he was a doctor after all. But why someone has to emphasize that? To add credibility?
If this ?mister? would just say that he was a Pharmacist or PharmD or ?Doctor of Pharmacy?? there is nothing offensive in ?mister?.

It really is probably more common place than some people realize. Working retail, a lot of our patients called the pharmacists "doctor." Most of the clinicians I know are also referred to as "doctor." Interestingly enough for those professors who just have their pharmd are still referred to as "doctor." I have never heard anyone referred to as "pharmacist jones" nor have i heard a pharmacist (pharmd) referred to as "mr. jones"

You don't call your chemistry professor Mr. Doe b/c it is considered disrespectful. After all they have done a lot of hard work and earned their phd and the title of "Doctor"
If someone insists that they be called "John" then that is a completely different story...

Thanks for banning the troll! 👍 I found it rather odd how it could have 100+ posts with a join date of only four days ago. 🙄

...probably a name change? 😕

Anyway, I have to give you guys (pharmacists, technicians, pre-pharms) your props.

Ignore the trolls. They probalby have nothing better to do and SDN is their only source of socialization. They are just angry because you're all smart, well spoken and dedicated to something in life that makes you happy and helps people....and makes $$$$ too. 😉

I have had some experiences (as a patient) and truly wish some of you had been my pharmacist.

👍 👍 👍 waaaay up to you all. 😀

Edit: obviously, I'm not so smart because I keep forgetting my grammar. 😳 😉

Yes, I am a Doctor. As of about 50 hours ago. Followed by a lot of Heineken and my first Boards coming on Tuesday.

-Dr. MNnaloxone. (and if you don't think I should have it, I don't really care. You shouldn't either.)
