...Like for examination?

I've never taken my shirt of when examining a patient. LOL!

Oh wait, you mean if we are examining each other? Nope, never have when we've examined each other. Though when I've volunteered to be the subject of an ultrasound, I took my shirt off...but that was just for the volunteers. I think my fellow students snickered at my 40yo tire, but quietly under their breath! 😀

Lol... Thanks. I guess that's only for the osteopathic schools.

Uhhhh, not really. Definitely went to an MD school. When we did physical exams dudes took their shirts off and chicks wore sports bras. It was moooooooooney.

Yep. I had a classmate palpate my sciatic nerve the other week, too. Gotta save we've become pretty close.

I had to take my shirt off for an EKG lab. The chicks in my lab group got really shy when they were being shown were to palpate for intercostal spaces. Probably because my perfectly physique chest caught them off guard 😉

That and the other day I was trying to be considerate of a girls privacy when I was using her sternal angle to determine JVP, and the teacher got upset that I was doing over top of her shirt and so she came over and practically yanked the girls shirt down to below her bra line. I just said, "Don't worry, we'll be reaaaaaalllll good friends after this!"

Lol.. Oh wow... That's rude. I would've been really upset with that teacher.

That's pretty strange to me. At my school we're all really open about it. During clinical exams pretty much every guy has his shirt off and all the girls are in spaghetti straps and we're supposed to examine each other pretty hands-on. Funny story actually, we were learning the back exam and I was supposed to palpate all the way down to L5. I had difficulty distinguishing which was which so my teacher came up to me and had me do it on her. Needless to say, I had to get over shyness pretty quickly.

Lol... wow. I guess I will too. This should be interesting. 😉

All of you are missing out by not going to a DO school. Once you do the "Ischial tuberosity spread" there's no such thing as shyness.

We have standardized patients for all that stuff.....

Men take their shirts off. Ladies do too, but they have a sports bra on.
MD school here.

I go to a DO school and you think L5 is embarrassing? Try palpating for the pubic symphysis on the first day of OMM.

To my male partner: "Excuse me, are your genitalia out of the way before i try to feel for your pubic symphysis? Oh no? Please adjust yourself while I look away..." 😳

Ha so true... we had that first day of OMM as well. The next week was coccyx palpation. Good times all around

LOL, bad lighting? You've got the classic single overhead light to cast shadows on yourself, which accentuates your physique. Take a picture with a head-on flash for comparison.

One reason I never got into bodybuilding, I just never cared to take photos of myself to post on websites. I always preferred breaking personal records. 😛

Gross. Your arms are too big, your waist is too small (for a man), and the dimples/dents/tire tracks on your pecs look like they belong to a 60 year old man. You're shaped like an upside-down piece of candy corn.

Gross.

Since when is 17 inch arms big. And dimples/dents is not an anatomical term...

 THIS.

OMM attire for women is a pair of gym shorts and a tanktop/anything with a low back.

Men, just shorts.

As a girl, I can say having some strange guy trying to reach into my shirt to find my xiphoid process pretty much ended the whole "shyness" thing. Hahaha

MD school 1970-1974. We had to do same sex rectal exams. That was pretty much SOP at that time around the country.

Whoa... talk about an invasion of privacy. I don't know if I could look my classmates in the eye after that.

ROFL. That's exactly what I was thinking. But you ask for it when you post greasy self-masturbation pics on a non-body-buidling forum 😛 Your traps say you're a swimmer. Would I be right? Rock those pecs a little more and you'll look a little less Phelps-ish. Your body fat % is crazy, though, homes. 👍

In PA school it was guys in gym shorts and girls in sports bras and gym shorts twice a week for learning the physical exam.

One of our instructors said that when she was in PA school they did pelvics and rectals on each other as well. So honestly, I don't quite mind bearing my belly.

He's exaggerating. I go to the same school. Guys are the only ones who ever have to take their shirts off at our school, and only some girls don spaghetti tops; our school only requires that girls come to class in thin, sleeveless blouses or hike up short sleeves for examination. Not everyone is super comfortable with letting their fellow classmates palpate them and I, too, would be upset if a teacher did that to me; even when you're examining a patient, you ask for permission before having them expose themselves.

You get gradually more comfortable with the process the more you have to do practice physicals, but if your conservatism stems from a cultural or religious background, you will not be forced to do something that makes you uncomfortable. Just speak with a professor about your predicament. Cultural sensitivity is an important part of training in our profession, and removing clothes for a doctor is very different from removing clothes in a room with lots of your co-ed peers.

Oh wow... I feel a lot better now. Thanks for the accurate insight.

Sounds like you've been to bodybuilding forums before. My profile pic is of me during my competition back in 2004.

If you M1's or D1's knew the kind of abject humiliation you will experience as third year students, the idea of putting your finger up your buddy's poop shute would seem trivial. Trust me.

I'm a few electives away from being done with M4, and haven't experienced what you describe. Maybe things have changed since you were in school.

All I know is that we learned how to do rectals and pelvic on real humans. I hear that they're using Animatrons and "Standardized Patients". Nothing beats the stress of learning how to draw blood for the first time on your lab partner, with five venipunctures over a four hour period when we learned about the 4-hour oral glucose tolerance test. Can't draw blood from a robot, or maybe you can these days. We never had issues of "invasion of privacy", which I hear some of the female students get up tight about these days when their lab bud is asked to put them in the stirrups for a bimanual pelvic exam. Definitely not your father's med school.

we almost always have guys volunteer but girls can as well- if we are going to be doing anything on eachother that would require chest/abdomen region to be used the faculty always send out an email that says wear athletic clothes. I usually do sports bra and then a tank top and it doesn't bother me. Plus we get to pick our own partners and we get to go into curtained exam rooms to work through exam skills.

Where I went we examined each other, sometimes with opposite sex partners. I've had to stick my hand down a female's pants to palpate inguinal lymph nodes. You get over it. Like the old timer said above, medical students routinely did rectals on each other in the 70's.

Thanks, deuist. Imagine how cool it would be to palpate a female student's inguinal lymph nodes on the same day you had the lecture on Lymphogranuloma Venereum. Oh, the possibilities.
