Are there any other forums on the net that are sort of like studentdoctor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

What I mean is that I'm looking for another forum on the net that has a whole bunch of people from different fields posting- a person with a degree in philosophy/mathematics/physics/biology/history/English and other stuff. Basically a place for the learned (college students and professors). I like this site but there's no place where I can get book recs for the humanities.

Question- Is there a forum on the net where I can get "legit" (from the people with degrees on the topics/professors/ college students) book reccomendations for the sciences, maths, and humanities? All in one stop? I'm doing this b/c I'd like to learn more.

Thanks for the help

why don's u ask ur professors for book recs? How can anyone prove that some anonymous poster has degree XYZ in ABC??

Physicsforums.com for math/engineering/science.

What do you mean by "book recs"? Like textbook suggestions?

The closest site I know of in terms of traffic is College Confidential. It's really for high school students applying to college, but it has a college life and preprofessional sections.

There is only one SDN and this is it.

I STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT use this website. College Confidential is such a disappointing website.

Any reason why? I have found it very helpful.

I agree

You think the people on SDN are neurotic? That takes it to another level and it simply is unhealthy to be around.

I thought it was an immensely helpful site for getting into college. SDN and CC are certainly different, though, both have their positives.

Does Oprah still have the book club?

I actually find SDN Pre-Allo more neurotic than CC. But just because you don't like the general attitude there doesn't mean that it's not a useful resource. In terms of information on college admissions and BS/MD programs, it by far trumps hSDN. It also has a small but still active section on graduate programs. Their section about medical school however obviously cannot compare to SDN.

thanks for the physicsforum site. r there any sites for the humanities? I apologize for the confusion, I'm not in college yet, still in high school. By book recs I meant both textbooks and none textbooks (philosophies/histories/sciences). The textbooks list I'm looking for are like for freshman classes at certain colleges and what not.

So what's the reason you want to know what textbooks are used at colleges? Most people just buy the text that their professor requires and supplement it with a guide if it happens to not be sufficient. There's nothing wrong with knowing what textbooks there are being used at other colleges but it's really not reasonable to buy them all and read them. People tend to think, "Oh, I'm going to buy multiple texts and the sheer amount of information will let me ace everything", but really all you need is one good, clear textbook.

Also, if you're talking about humanities book recs... in the humanities textbooks aren't utilized as much as they are in science classes.

+1

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't thinking of buying the books- renting 1 or 2 and reading. Also I'm just interested in the humanities and philosophy in general and like reading about them.

Have you tried here? Not everyone here has blinders on that prevent them from soaking up culture. I've seen (and contributed to) off-topic threads about a good book you're reading.

That's not to say you shouldn't branch out and look for other forums. But I'm always looking for good book discussions!
