Are there multiple ways to fold for Pattern Folding

In the explanations, CDP only fold one specific way. For example, they choose only once centerpiece and folds from there. Does it matter which piece I use to make my base? Will the shape still come out the same or different?

When doing pattern folding, do you guys try to picture the image in 3d, or just try to eliminate answers?

Look for one unique 2D shape instead of trying to picture the object in 3D.
