Are there problems with BYU Independent Study classes from an ADCOM perspective?

Another SDNer recommended BYU Independent Study. I talked to my university's advising staff about it and they are willing to take a Molecular Biology class I want as an upper-level Biological Sciences elective.

I have a little over 100 credits at a regular university right now (~140 at graduation between my two majors), so it's not like it would be more than a few classes (max of 3-4 - waiting on an answer for some gen eds).

Any problems with this from an ADCOM point of view? The only other posts I could really find were from the pre-dent forum and I know things can be different for admissions in the two fields.

From what I understood, it's the Internet age replacement for pre-Internet correspondence colleges.

@Goro - You seem to know everything. 🙂 Thoughts?

ETA: I am nearly finished with a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences & Psychology from a brick and mortar state university. This is extra stuff.

I'm not following you. Are you worried about taking a single class online? Or is multiple classes? Please elaborate.

Thank you for your question.

I am considering taking 2 Biology classes online through this platform: Molecular Biology & Microbiology.

I am waiting to hear back from my school's World Languages department on whether they'll take courses from this format to satisfy that general education requirement.

So, it's an absolute max of 2 classes relevant to med school and possibly more "All other" classes that I just need to graduate or apply to other grad programs and aren't science classes.

For example, I'm also planning to apply to Speech Therapy programs and it looks like I can do some of my Speech Therapy specific classes there too (e.g. Language Development and more Child Development classes). The Speech Therapy classes aren't offered locally, which is why I'm thinking about doing those through BYU Independent Study too.

Taking extra science electives there to transfer to my home institution is just convenient.

MD/DO is the much more competitive program and so I try not to do anything to screw that up.

BYU is an institution that probably punches above its weight as far as pre-med placements go. Sincerely doubt there would be any issues taking a class or two even if online

Follow-up question because I feel like I'm walking on eggshells with my application:

I go to and will graduate from University of "Midwestern_state"

My school is still mostly online. By happenstance, all of the classes I need have opted to stay online.

I know the conventional wisdom is never to take prereqs online.

Because of that pandemic out there, it will be online whether I took it at an all-online university like BYU Independent Study or if I took it at "home".

Do you think it's okay to take 2 prereqs through BYU Independent Study given this scenario? I am missing a couple still.

@Goro and/or @Moko
