Hey guys. Just have a quick question about ecs. Lately, I've been seeing posts by people listing waitering jobs as their ECs. Can we really put this in there? I'm curious because I have been a head waiter for a family business for 4 years. I am also my family's web designer for our business's website..Do these skills count for anything?

Thanks!

Any employment can be listed on the AMCAS application. If you weren't paid, it can be listed under "Other." I'd say that both the mentioned activities have importance.

Anything you do that takes signifacant time outside of school should probably get listed. There are so many skills and experiences one could posess that would help with a carreer in medicine and you can aquire them in so many different ways. Waitering jobs require signifacant people skills. I worked in food service for 4 years. You really have to develop some interpersonal skills to last in that type of job and I think adcoms look favorably on that.

Definitely list it, but if you were paid, then it should be classified as employment, not extracurricular.

AMCAS has a section called "experience". You categorize items and "employment, non-military" is a category. Sometimes an item could qualify for two labels and you need to choose (being employed to do research, for example).

thanks for the reply guys! its nice to know that not all of the ecs have to be directly related to the medical field 🙂 since it is a family business, I don't get paid, so i guess it will go under the "other" section?
