"A candidate must not possess any chronic or recurrent illnesses, including infectious, psychiatric, or substance abuse problems that can interfere with patient care or safety and are not compatible with medical practice or training."

How do these rules benefit patients?

it clearly says "a candidate must not possess ... problems that can interfere with patient care or safety" and you are asking how this policy benefits patients?
its not saying all chronic illnesses/problems just ones specifically that impact patient care and safety...

Maybe I’m the only one who read it this way - but it appears to me that rule gives this med school grounds to rescind admission to candidates who might have, say, had an alcohol abuse problem that they overcame. Or were previously suicidal, etcetc.

You’re probably right, though. These rules rarely lead to discrimination in practice.

You’re probably right, though. These rules rarely lead to discrimination in practice.

The rule is saying if you have something that will interfere with patient care. I.e. if you are currently in any way incapable of patient care due to something.
