Hello all,

So, I was told my research group has 6 pending abstracts/pubs under review (and 2 more just submitted). All these abstracts (4 of em) have been presented at national GI conferences and accepted to those. I am second author on 3 of them and third on the last one. I was looking at publication materials for our group and saw that all four also were added into the American Journal of Gastroenterology (has an S#-tag so im assuming supplemental). They all have DOIS, so I'm curious how I would list them on AMCAS if needed for reapplication or send an update letter including them all (and if they count). Because I am also kind of confused, so hopefully someone with more research experience and publishing experience for clinical research (like adcoms or physicians here) could help me understand this stuff (since my group leads are on break right now):

Do they count as pubs, specificy as abstract pubs, or dont count (even with DOIs)?

Would I list them in pubs/posters section? Or clarify they are posters/abstracts that also underwent a committee review and were put into the journal's main site.

Also, would it be worth it to send an update letter with all these DOIs since they were added into the journals after my last update letter?

Well, a DOI is just currency for a publication unit, including abstracts. For me, I like PubMed numbers (PMID) too.
I see. So do they (dois and our research items) hold any weight/are valid enough to list on amcas or update?

If your application was lacking any outcomes of your research (no publications, presentations or other evidence of output) then this could help a little bit at schools that value research output (e.g. those that require a thesis for MD graduation).

If you have publications and presentations on your AMCAS application, these additional items are unlikely to tip the balance in your favor.

In my app, I referenced that they were under review. But no actual pubs were listed. But do these count as worthy publications in general? Or do I have to classify them/specify the nature of them differently

You can have one section of your AMCAS activities as research and list all the research materials that you have published. Some people break them up into multiple sections for each project. From my understanding, the bulk of premed research isn't groundbreaking, and what adcoms are looking for is whether or not you understand how to do research, if you understand how to publish, and if this research was meaningful to your story/how it will make you impactful as a doctor. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. It's sort of up to you how you wish to list them.

First off, schools appreciate large updates than small ones. You mention you already updated—what was the content of that previous update?

Second, in general abstracts are not worth too much unless say you were the one presenting (at least in academia). No one can tell you if you should update or not but assuming that you’ve already presented, surely some of your papers are getting ready to be published in the conference proceedings? Those would probably be worth updating on, and you can send your DOI links along with that update.

Conference proceedings? They were published in the conference journals, but the full-length papers are still under review

Yes, conference proceedings. If the meeting was held by a professional society that has its own journal (like the American College of Gastroenterology has the AJG), then sometimes they will publish the conference proceedings (including abstracts) from a given meeting in a supplemental issue.

Most of time "abstract" just means poster. Posters aren't nothing, but the bar to get one accepted to a meeting is substantially lower than getting an original scientific manuscript through the peer review process an into a reputable journal.

I see. So they are listable but hold less weight than a full blown pub in a big journal. Im gonna list them then/update cuz it cant hurt at this stage. But thank you for the info

Additionally, if you do end up needing to reapply (fingers crossed you don't), just list them all together under one activity with the category "publications". I know some people will say there is a correct way to cite them, but for mine I just listed the title, journal name, date of publication, and if I was first author due to character count limitations. I assume with the number you have you will run into similar issues as well fitting them all in. If they are all under a central theme you can title it as such as well.

If they are posters then just list them as posters. Include their doi’s as applicable.

We submitted them as abstract pubs first, then did posters at conferences. But yea essentially. I’ll do that! Thank you for your help and advice

I appreciate the advice! I will definitely do that. Maybe put in an update letter too just in case cuz why not

This makes no sense to me, but carry on.
Very sorry, i misread your original post and my reply was missing a few key words. How you described it is correct. Idk how i misinterpreted anything u originally wrote cuz it was exactly how we did it. Sorry again😭
