Here's the story...I got a 31 on my MCAT and a 3.67 over all GPA and a 3.49 science GPA (according to AMCAS). I don't have any research experience and I have few volunteering experiences (which are very meaningful to me). I have volunteered in hospitals helping to meet needs of patients after surgery, did some meaningful community restoration projects, worked at a soup kitchen, and other things like this. I have started to volunteer in a lab at a local hospital and I get to see a lot of things and get a lot of hands on experience there that I feel is valuble and believe schools would consider to be valuble. The schools don't know about this lab experience since I started after my AMCAS was verified, but I did imply that I planned on volunteering in a pathology lab at a hospital. So I recently got an interview invite from Baylor:soexcited:... I am in no way complaining or regreting this (believe me I jumped around for quite a while). But I am a realist, so after all of the adrenaline stopped flowing and the euphoria subsided, I started thinking... Are they just leading me on? I need some real opinions on this...not replies like "I don't think they would have given you an interview if they weren't interested" or things like that. I know this already, but a part of me still can't help but think that they are leading me on. I mean from what I understand Baylor is big on research...my resume contains no research. My stats are below their average and I don't have ECs coming out of my ears (as many of their applicants do). I also feel this way because I applied as a disadvantaged minority and I do know that my stats could have been higher and should have been higher, but some of us have ways of screwing ourselves over. The thing is I know I could have scored higher on my MCAT and I know my GPA could have been higher (I missed A's in some of my classes by one test question, which I probably misread). I feel that they are giving me an interview just because I am a disadvantaged minority and have no real intentions on accepting me unless I perform twice as good at the interview than their top candidate. I know I can cut it at Baylor...I'm not scared of an acceptance...but I am my own worst enemy at times and I am my number one critic. So I guess I am asking for your opinions on this. Are they toying with me or are they really interested and consider me to be competitive?😕

Read and reply? Is that what people do on forums? 🙄

Schools don't waste their time interviewing people who don't stand a chance of acceptance.
I need some real opinions on this...not replies like "I don't think they would have given you an interview if they weren't interested" or things like that.
Then what the hell do you expect? "I want your opinion on this, but don't tell me the truth."

Um, they WOULDNT have given you an interview invite if they werent interested. You are letting SDN get to you when you think an interview invite is a bad thing just because your stats dont match.... SIgn off for a week then see if you can still think that.

Oookaay:eyebrow:...you need to go and take your medicine. I put that in there because I know people like you would come in and be sarcastic when saying that...as you have proven me right? Also you seem like you are irritated by the post...and if you are...why did you even bother replying? Somebody needs some hugs and attention :ninja:
P.S. I added the ninja because it makes me laugh...maybe it could help you laugh and love life a little more

I know SDN is known for having stellar applicants, I know my stats are competitive...maybe I'm freaking because Baylor is one of my top choices and I personally hold them with high regard. I haven't gone crazy like this since the whole process started this cycle. I guess everybody has there time:scared:...I'm just trying to make sure it's me freaking out by getting other people's opinion on the situation, and thanks for not being sarcastic about it.

If you know the answer to your question before you ask it and tell people not to give that answer, you're going to get some flustered responses. Hugs and attention are great, but what I really need is people to stop being ridiculous when making posts. Go enjoy your interview, and stop freaking out.

They are not toying with you. They saw something in your personal statement that suggests you will become the type of doctor they are trying to produce. Don't doubt yourself or feel you are any less deserving than a competitor with five research publications (and perhaps lesser personal attributes, considering they moled up in a lab for years on end). There is something unique about you that they want to see among those who make up their next class. Don't sabotage yourself with self doubt. Go to your interview confident. Rediscover those reasons why you felt Baylor is a great institutuion that you'd love to be a part of, and radiate a great attitude when you meet your interviewers.

This is totally normal - You got an interview at a 3.8+/high MCAT school with a 3.67/31 MCAT. You are a disadvantaged minority. There are not many minorities who are ALSO disadvantaged (double big help to your application) that are getting 31 MCATs or ~3.7 GPAs.

I think you know that this happened largely due to the bold above since you said "I feel that they are giving me an interview just because I am a disadvantaged minority". But, if it helps - even if they gave you it just because you are a minority/disadvantaged - take it. If I got an interview invite, I'd be on a plane headed to Baylor so fast. Like others have said, they have a certain number of interviews to hand out - if you were not special they would not even send one your way! 👍

...is this guy for real

Wrong. I have an interview at UCLA with 3.96/30 and im white/not disadvantaged. Don't try to write off people's personal attributes with minority bull****.

You have a 3.96... UCLA with those stats is not surprising at all

Their average MCAT is in the mid 30's, and a 3.9-ish is fairly commonplace at many of the UC's. GPA isn't everything. I'd say his getting an interview is a testament to the subjective portion of his application more than his excellent GPA.

I agree Milkman that a 3.9 can be found, especially in the UC med schools but we are talking a 3.9+/30 for a SOM with 3.8/34 average (he is above by a good amount for gpa and yes he is under for MCAT but not by too far).

A 3.96/30 comparing to a 3.8/34 is not the same as a 3.67/31 with 0 research for a school with 3.85/34.5/heavily research oriented. Also, Baylor accepts ~80% Texan residents. The OP did not say that they were a Texan resident, unless I am mistaken. So it seems unrealistic even with far more unlikely than the UCLA guy

Yea it is pretty far. And my research experience is fairly limited as well. Like I said, I wrote about my passion for serving underserved communities after a trip I took, which probably highlighted a feature they were looking for since they are really big on serving the Latino population of LA.

So OP, they saw something they liked, they are not screwing with you. They wouldnt waste their time on you if they didnt think you were acceptable.
