Dude, just when I thought that the premeds I knew were hardcore, I discovered SDN. You guys are definitely very motivated. But do guys think people here are geeks? I mean, some of us might not be carrying the very thick glasses, but are we all kind of geeks in the inside?

I am just wondering, how often do you guys check sdn? Are you ever signed off? Do you have any favorite or recommended threads? And, do you guys actually party?

We are the geeks, we are the premeds.

sdn gets addicting really fast. and you dont have to be a "geek" to be considered intelligent. although im sure most of us here are quite nerdy in some way 😉

I am defenately addicted to this forum ( at work I check it at least 10 times/day 🙄 )- Reading all of those threads keep me motivated toward my goal of becoming a Doctor.

Also I do not consider myself a nerd or a geek (even though I work in computer science right now), I am the girl next door who enjoy shopping, partying, traveling and reading funny thread on SDN

But do guys think people here are geeks?

Not really - not all of them at least.

I mean, some of us might not be carrying the very thick glasses, but are we all kind of geeks in the inside?

I will admit I am a geek - hell the dorm I lived in freshman year even dubbed its residents "nerds" I am fine with that title.

I am just wondering, how often do you guys check sdn?

If I am on a kick more than once a day but otherwise maybe once a week.

Are you ever signed off?
Do months and months of my internet not working count?

Do you have any favorite or recommended threads?
The 30+ Mcat thread is helpful. There was a thread awhile back were a girl kept complaining about the stuff her mom would do to her and it was hilarious. Here's hoping this link works.

And, do you guys actually party?
Hell yeah.

We are the geeks, we are the premeds.

Heh - maybe this should go on my profile. Though I personally prefer nerds.

👍 so we're the cool, hot, socially active geeks? lol, ok, to be pc, you can replace geek by intelligent or nerdy, lol 👍

And all geeks arent intelligent.

Anyway, hell no were not geeks! Atleast I'm not. I play 3 sports, attend sporting events, and love to have a good time. My 2 cousins are the coolest people you will ever meet, and they are surgical residents.

ya- after posting here a while, i think definitely a chunk of the people on here are really kinda geeky. but they seem happy to be in their own little element of neuroses and dorkiness. i come here to help people out and get helped out with Qs and As. This is a site full of a wide range of good people.

as for the partying - i do a little too much considering the fact that I'm applying to med schools. i'm a 5th year senior but i'll be done after this semester. i've gone drinking the last 6 nights straight. now that i woke up feeling kinda sick i think i'll be able to get back to my secondaries and handle some ****.

i think we're all a teensy bit nerdy. but remember...most of us work hard, and alot of us play harder, too. so i think it goes both ways. sdn is a way for me to feel connected with all the people who are going through the same sh@#. you know?

just to prove that i am not nerdy, i will say that i do pageants...i was a california's junior miss and recently a miss california top 10 !!!...

and yes, you can find me drunkenly dancing on top of tables occasionally.

but for the most part, you will find me obsessing over homework, classes, and my research job. so i guess i would consider myself well rounded (my undergrad degree was actually in cello performance...i'm a musician too!)
🙂

🙂
🙂

I'm a geek in too many ways to count but this site is useful for motivating myself to stay on top of things application-wise and staying informed. I'll admit that I normally check this site once daily (on Weekdays) to browse the topics when I encounter some down-time in between experiments at work...

Other than that, though, I have a life outside of SDN 😱 , albeit, a stressful one with med school apps, work, school, and such. 🙂

If you get into med school, you probably have a large streak of "nerd" in you. Don't deny it - who else studies organic chemistry through the night? Ever been the only one a large section of the library? Yeah, thought so. Been in a research lab? Don't even tell me that's not nerdy.

Be careful of conflating ambition with geekiness.

Be careful of making statements that will betray your true nerdiness.

i would like to think i am a geek/nerd :] being premed is cool 😎

Nerd as I always m about the writing… nerdy-ness faints when I really get into the writing. What do I do? Have a book in my hand and some big glasses on my computer table??

in response to the OP title...

damn skippy, we are! though i try to downplay by socializing and going out to the beach and bars 😎

The response to this is: Someone trying to get a doctorate in organic chemistry. If you think first year ochem is hard, think about what these students go through. I am a med student and although I work hard, I wouldn't consider myself a nerd. I'll save nerdiness for the engineers and computer science people. That's what a lot of society thinks anyway. 🙄

From dictionary.com:

A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

**** society. why is intelligence and craving for knowledge looked upon so negatively? 👎

We're nerds only to a limited extent. I don't recall many doctors whom patients described as nerds 🙂

beacause most poeple dont care about studying, they go to college to party, drink, etc.

I think that most pre-meds are, as many have said, nerdy only to a limited extent.. the image of a nerd brings someone with "thick rimmed glasses and is interested in science mostly for its own sake" to mind... i.e. graduate students in pure physics or mathematics... but it's something that goes against the m.d. philosophy I would think! Isn't the goal science for the purpose of saving and improving lives?

No bounds, our geekyness knows

It isn't. But, pre-meds like to think that they are the only "nerds." So, in reference to the other poster, I say, if you think ochem at the ugrad level is hard work, think about what the grad students in those programs go through. Again, pre-med ochem should not consist of staying up all night and being the only one in the library. And pre-meds being the only people staying long hours at the library is total bs. Ive seen psych majors, sociology majors etc. (planning on grad school) spend all night at the library doing research for their papers. Math majors, physics majors (non-pre-meds)working in their grad office until late hours of the night.
oh, no, I don't think that pre-meds are the only nerds by ANY stretch of the imagination - but I still think that we are nerds to an extent. Most of them are still pretty sociable, but I'd consider most people going for an advanced degree to have a nerd streak. People always think of it as a bad thing or something, but whatever.

Nerds are hot. 😍

i agree and i don't really care what society thinks of us nerds!

i'm a nerd and proud of it!!! i didn't used to be one, but being a nerd is so much more fun 🙂 !!! i think "nerd" is a better term. "geek" sounds like somebody who lives with their mother at the age of 30 and is obsessed with star trek.

i like sdn because it's the only place i can be my premed self. none of my friends are premed and i think i'm the only premed at my school.

yeah right! you go to a california school, come on now. 😉

Like my post above says, we've got even nerdier people that aren't in medicine. Some are in non-science fields too. Non-science people that do really, really well. Those people that have read and studied textbooks before classes have even begun. Ugrad non pre-med students in math, physics, geology and the list goes on. These students weren't even planning on grad school. They were just in to learning. They were so interested in the material that they made sure to understand things that weren't even testable.

It is funny. I had a really short discussion about this with an FP and a couple of my classmates in med school. They all felt nerd=weird. They didn't want doctors that were nerds, they want those that are not socially inept.

Our admissions officer tells this in her exact words to pre-med students: "We don't want nerds, we want well rounded people that can communicate with others."

Geophysicists are nerds, however. That is one of the most esoteric sciences around. You have to know three disciplines VERY WELL (be able to teach ugrads) before even entering a doctorate program in this.
yeah i know, there are many nerds in fields besides medicine and science. i define "nerd" as someone who likes learning a certain subject or all subjects and someone who actually cares about their education. "geeks" are socially inept -- at least that's how i see it.

yeah, i go to a CA COMMUNITY college, not as many premeds as you think. maybe they're just keeping their premed status to themselves 😉

Yea man. Ambitious people are not nerdy, they are focused. There is a difference.

I'm a nerd at heart, but I'm definitely more jock-looking than nerd-looking. I actually think I am discriminated against by some of my teachers, especially in writing classes and my recent psych class with an extra-nerdy proff. I'm getting some glasses to help me fit in. 🙂

Uhm... 1/3 of SDNers are virgins... I think that speaks for itself. I am not a nerd, or a geek in any sense, which scares the crap outta me, how am I going to keep up with all these bookworms! I don't even get QofQuimica's joke in her avatar!

That just makes you slow, not cool. 😉

I'd say there's a clear difference between being a geek and being a well-rounded person. Most med school students are well-rounded and so I don't think we're all geeks. I'd say grad students are geekier than MD students, especially in the CS/physics/math department.

Yeah I don't get it either, but I was afraid to ask. (I just had my psych final today....and we would call that Pluralistic Ignorance...oh god I really am a nerd  )

i actually had a discussion about this today with my colleagues. people in med school tend to be more well rounded with both a personality while retaining intelligence. it is important for a doctor to be able to communicate with patients, while it is fine if a computer science guy to hide in his basement programming his life away (hope i dont offend anyone). i heard schools like cal tech dont even have interviews, they accept based on pure numbers.
