Are white males really that disadvatnaged in applying to medical schools?

I know the topic of URM/AA is a horse that has been beaten to death and continues to get beaten, but this is just a quick question. Going to Eastern Michigan University, there are a lot of UofM medical school hopefuls. Since 2002, one EMU graduate has gone to UofM, and that person just happened to be a URM. So of all the pre-med intentions that graduate each year for 4 years, only one has gotten into UofM (most go to wayne state, then MSU.)

Putting academics aside (assuming I have a stellar GPA and MCAT), exactly how much of an effect does affirmative action have on me as a white male? I know a lot of people have strong opinions on AA, but I'm really curious how much it will actually effect my chances of going to an AA school.

if you are a good candidate youll get acepted somewhere.....even if you are an ALIEN!.......wait that would be an URM!!

You'll never know how much though, because you will most likely never see the stats of the urms that "took" your place.

If you are a competitive applicant, decent mcat, gpa, personal statement, ecs, or any combination thereof, you will be fine.

Apply broadly.

URMs do sometimes get into programs with "less competitive stats" but don't beat your head against the wall because you can never be sure of how much this happens or at all, or if you would have gotten in anyway . Whether or not you believe its fair, its here to stay, so don't burn up. Plenty of all types of talented people are turned down from medical school.

There is plenty of room for everybody in medicine.

hopefully that helps.

its sad isn't it

i mean, theres no such thing as a well-qualified URM

every URM in med school is in med school solely based on AA and not on their own merits

your a ass. I have read your public forum. I think you like fights from DO's to AA. You need help or a girlfriend. if u can't get that, use your right hand.

it's worse to be a white female. More URM females apply, yet med schools try to keep their med school classes aprox 50% male-female

/so sayeth duke ad com uncle

Don't even glorify with a response. Did you see his name and title? A quick "ignore" will solve that situation.

To OP. I'm a fellow Michigander (white male too) nearby at the University of Michigan. The concept of undergraduate institution (regardless of race) DOES have a bearing on where one gets accepted. It's a frustrating reality (mostly becuase not everyone can afford an upper institution). I had looked at lists of upper-tier med schools to see where the matriculated students came from, and it's always the big names. Also, for a big ugly dose of reality, my med school interview Friday at U of M was a big who's who list - they were all from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UCBerkeley, WashU (I felt pretty humbled being from U of M) - none were from Central, Eastern, Western, Grand Valley, or even Hope College. So set realistic goals and work like hell - get a great MCAT, GPA, and experiences.

Thanks for posting this, Beaverfetus. Up till now, I've never had a good retort for all those sexists who come onto SDN periodically and whine about how women have an unfair advantage over men in this process.
