are you going to buy a new computer for med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hopefully I can buy 1 when my financial aid for med school comes.

Definetely buying a new laptop. I've used my current Dell Inspiron for 4.5 years and based on how it's working now it's clear that the laptop is at the end of it's life.

I'm going to wait till June or July? (Before Med School Orientation for sure though) and shop for a laptop under $1000. Going to buy a PC from the Windows Store, since those laptops are optimized for windows 8 and don't come with pre-installed bloatware.

anyone else old enough to remember p-p-p-powerbook?

not only enough but familiar---loved it.

I personally will be keeping my Yoga 2 Pro as my laptop---and then build a new desktop. My current desktop is going to be a little over 3 years old and is showing it's age.

GTX 560 and an i5-2500k. Measly 8 gigs ram.

Most likely will avoid a GPU and instead just go for higher end CPU and 3 monitor s. Haswell Integrated Graphics should be able to handle any gaming I have planned.

Mine is 5+ and I'm surprised it's lasted this long. The 5870 somehow has held it's own longer than I expected. I still only have 4GB of RAM :\ I decided to get a triple monitor setup 2 years ago instead of upgrading the components, but I don't regret that for a second, 3 screens is flipping awesome.

I'm waiting until DDR4 memory comes out and I'll probably upgrade then.

5 Years is pretty good--assuming you're still on Vista?

and I really want a third monitor--frackin AMD cards put out so many ports--my 560 only has 2. Can't wait to have a third.

In other news--I have no idea how people only use 1 monitor---feels so unproductive.

I'm on 7 and will probably stick with that for a while. 8 is terrible on non-touchscreen devices.

That was 10 years ago. Back then it was state of the art and quite ahead of its time. The first tablet.

Laugh it up. Some of us remember rotary phones and when "remote controls" on the TV were corded.

The first computer I used as a kid was a huge white Gateway desktop. Why was everything that gross off-white color?

There she is.😍
It could run Star Trek: Armada quite well. But, so could an 8 digit calculator.

Really? I actually really like 8 without a touchscreen. I do always use a mouse with my laptop though.

The OCD in me can't handle a laptop with a touchscreen. The fingerprintsssssss, they're everywhereeeee!!!!

Mandatory school laptop and maybe a mini tablet once I start 3rd/4th year so I don't have to carry around a bunch of books in my coat.

It's because manufacturers really liked adding bromine for flame ******ation in the ABS plastics used during the 80's/90's, when white was a popular color for electronics. With UV/O2 exposure it inevitably turns yellow over time. When you first got it, it probably actually was normal white!

Some schools have a "Computer Requirement" where you hand them $2000 and they give you a laptop. That way they have their whole class standardized. So, I'd check with your school first.

If the medical school I matriculate does this I'm going to tell them that I have manual bradykinesia and I cannot type. But BaconShrimps, how did you send us your essays? "Oh, my mom typed while I dictated. I love her, best mom in the world. I can haz MD now?"

Seriously that's freaking absurd.

All told, I will probably wait until 3rd or 4th year to get a new computer.
I dropped $1500 on a new laptop about 2 years ago. There is no way I'm upgrading any sooner than 4 years on this computer lol.

Yes. My laptop has done well for the past 6.5 years. I'll probably keep it around until it dies and use it for non-school related things.

My macbook pro is going on 6 years and still kicking. Might wait a bit before upgrading to a new computer.

I'm finally retiring my Vaio SZ360 from 2006 and probably getting a small laptop like a lenovo X1, sony pro 13, or acer s7. though the surface 2 is tempting for notes.
