You have put a lot of thought into this decision! While I can’t speak to VAMD, I can say that the 3-year program is more appealing for someone like yourself as you have described yourself. Personally, I have always been one to seek my own experienced and learn with what I have, so the distributive model fascinates me and it sounds like you are assigned a clinical mentor to keep you connected and on track to succeed at UAZ. I am in the boat of go to Tucson especially if it will be the same price as your instate. That is a no brainer if it were me. Good luck with your decision. Virginia is beautiful, i went to undergrad in WV and have fond memories of Appalachia and the Atlantic coast.
I am a current second year student at UofA. I would say that the curriculum is unique in that it requires a lot more in person and active participation from its students. That being said you really do get out of it what you put into it, so you still have to actively choose to participate.
I think if you want to do shelter medicine, there is a lot of opportunity at UofA. We have a shelter club that does spay and neuter, vaccine clinics and other events throughout the year. We spend an entire clinical year rotation at the humane society in Phoenix and you can also choose to use your elective rotations to do more shelter work if you would like to. We also have quite a few facility members who work with shelters or have in the past, so you would be able to ask a lot of questions about how it works and what it is like.
