I think the med school is USUHS (uniformed services university of health sciences). I'm pretty sure they require something like 7 years of military service after you're done with residency. If this was the only MD school you got into, but you weren't passionate about joining the military for that long, would you take the offer? I realize this is a vastly different situation than simply getting accepted to only your lowest choice med school or getting accepted to just a DO school and no MD schools...

for sure.. i'd go to a DO school.. 7 years is a long time.. 4 years of med + 3 to 7 years res + 7 years = a lot.. of time..

If I weren't passionate about joining the military, I wouldn't apply to this school in the first place.

Likewise, USUHS has pretty high standards, higher than that of a lot of state schools. They did not even consider me for an interview. They aren't hurting for applicants, AVG MCAT last year was a 31 with GPA of about 3.7. If you are applying here its because you want to, it is by no means a back up school.

well... possibly interested in the military, but for 7 years? idk.. how do you start a family or have a life? also, people's opinions change after they've looked further into a school and after getting accepted..

the thing is, if it's the only school you're accepted to.. and then you're accepted to a few DO places as well, is an md THAT worth it? it also probably wouldn't be a good idea to decline acceptance at USUHS and then reapply (I'm told people get "blacklisted"at ALL med schools if they've been accepted to at least one, but decline all their acceptances in order to reapply)

NO!

If you have already applied, I suggest you withdraw your application before a decision is made, if you're having second thoughts, in order to avoid potential repercussions.

Take a look into the Military Medicine forum, and you'll realize that if you have ANY doubts about a career in military medicine, you shouldn't go there. That forum is filled with bitter old dudes who want out of the military, and they will give you all the reasons you need to stay out.

That is where I will be matriculating in the Fall, so I don't want any classmates who aren't interested in serving for the full commitment! Fun fact: 80% of military doctors who stay till retirement are USUHS graduates.

As to the "how do you start a family or have a life" question: we have a pretty huge military, and it is a largely family oriented place. I think the majority of people in the armed forces have families.

I would do it. I'd rather owe 7 years in the military after residency and be an MD, than have to go to a DO school. Don't know why, and I'm not trying to knock it, but I just wouldn't want to be a DO.

As far as family goes, it would be MUCH easier to start a family if you attended USUHS. You'd be making much more money than you would as a civilian student, wouldn't be acquiring any debt, and then as a resident you'd be making around twice as much as a civilian resident (again, with no loans to pay back).

I have considered applying to USUHS, so if that was my only acceptance I would probably take it. I don't know that I would choose it over a DO school, though, if I liked the DO school more.

I'm sure. I plan on attending and retiring. The 7 year obligation after residency can give you 10-14 years of active duty time after a possible GMO tour and a residency from 3-7 years.

A lot of people start families and have a life while in the military. Trust me, if there's one thing a service member knows how to do, it's procreate 😀

Several of my classmates have wives/husbands, and probably just as many have at least one kid.

There's something about giving someone else the power of telling me what I can do, who I have to kill or hate or think of as my enemy, and where I can live that just clashes with my constitution.

Then there's also the point about self-preservation and free will.

You have no experience with the military so I suggest you keep your uninformed thoughts to yourself.

The only time you will be killing someone as an military doc is if you go crazy (think Ft. Hood). Or when Hadjis over run your hospital and are killing your patients and nurses. At that point its only a suggestion you fight back. The military can't force a doctor to kill.

Wrong. but w/e.

actually, i don't need to have experience with the military, or your permission, to say what I said in my previous post. But thanks!

I only made a suggestion. Without experience with the military, your posts about the military seem quite foolish.

Can you read? I just said WRONG. I have a lot of experience with the military.

What is it? It's actually none of your business.

But thanks anyway.

edit: the OP was asking if I would consider going to USUHS even with the 7 years of service after training. I said no and I listed the reasons. None of my experience or inexperience of the military has anything to do with my reasons.

The military, once you've signed, tells you where you can go. T/F?
The military, once you've signed, tells you what you can do. T/F? (Example, I'd like to do MSF asap, but I can't. Because I'm stationed in osaka or Kabul).
Upon signing, you swear an oath to the constitution and you MUST follow the President's orders. T/F?

I happen to believe that serving a president of Dubbya's caliber is, to say the least, a colossal waste of time. That's just IMO.

So the military told who to kill, and who to hate, and what to do... and its a secret... Are you Jason Bourne?

I would have applied to USUHS but they don't take AP's. But I don't think you can beat being paid $42,000 to go to medical school.

I am indeed Jason Bourne. I'm on my way to your house right now.
