So, I have a few quests for people that have made the transition:

1) How many months early were you able to get released before school start?
I have been away from my family for a bit throughout my military career, so I would like some time off before school with my family.

2) Do you get PTDY? If so, how many days?

3) What do I need to do to get BOLC done before starting med school?

4) Do I need to go through ACAP?

1) depends how long it takes HRC to process your resignation. For me, that was a month, despite having my documents in a year in advance. Some others got a couple weeks. Varies wildly with no way to predict, although the process goes smoother if you've completed your initial ADSO.

2) HPSP is IRR time. Make your own schedule and don't fail med school.

3) if you did BOLC before, make sure it's on your ORB, and maybe your DD214, although honestly, I don't recall there being much scrutiny on that point.

4) Clearing post requires an ACAP appointment most places. One of the docs I've met had to do an ACAP appointment before he retired. It's just one of the nonsense things the Army finds is easier to make everyone do, rather than trying to figure out the target audience. You can ask about VA loans to buy your first house there, so that can be helpful. But it's mostly just a waste of a few hours.

Sorry, I meant to say is that do you get ptdy for transition from active duty to med school? I'm very well aware that HPSP is irr.

Also, do you get immediately from your unit released once you're accepted to hpsp or do they only let you go a few weeks before school start date?

So I found out that I need to call the HPSP assignment manager in order to figure out the amount of days out that I can get out before medical school start date. Does anyone have the contact info of this person? I am still putting in the HPSP package, so I don't know this details. I'm asking this because I want to let my unit ahead of time so they can account for alternate manpower in case of last minute missions.

If you check the AR for resignations and separations (forget the exact number), it says you should allow something like ten days for separations to pursue graduate education. Can't recall exactly how many it was, but I purposefully added that into my involuntary resignation timeline. Then you should start saving leave dates with the intention of taking your max allowable terminal leave. I ended up having to sell back leave dates, which sucks, but I also cleared post on terminal leave, and left after the soonest date I could get HHG picked up. As for leave prior to separation, that depends on how supportive your chain of command is. Mine was awesome about the whole process, which helped a lot.

I think your best bet is to try to get your BC to approve 10 days for house hunting while you're still active. A couple weeks before you clear post, take 10 days PTDY, come back and clear.

Also, if you find some good information about the transition please come back and share. I'm looking to do this in 2017 and there isn't a lot of information out there.

See. You're approved if the order is a PCS order. However, I have a feeling that this is an ETS order. If it's an ETS order, you certainly don't get all the benefits of a PCS order including 10 days PTDY for house hunting.

There are several reasons to give PTDY. I'd just explain it to your boss and it might work out. Possible outcome, you take 10 days, come back, form goes in shredder.
Sorry, bro. I'm trying to do things the right way.

I'm saying there's a bunch of reasons for ptdy. If your command approves it, then they let you go for however many days and the da31 won't eat any of your leave days.

*also, I'm not insinuating some shady thing. Your paperwork would just get shredded like a 4 day pass or paternity leave.

Yes, I have combed through the army regulations. There are many ways. However, it would help a ton if I know the typical order and sop for active duty members making the transition to med school via HPSP. Nobody knows what the hell is going on.

I have arranged a meeting with my commander next week, so hopefully I can be given more info by then. I will certainly share any of my findings with the forum for future applicants out there.

Ok, I have spent some time combing the army regulations for enlisted soldiers. Here're some findings:

1) According to AR 635-200 Chapter 16-1, you can be discharged of up to 30 days before the starting date of the school term or officer training program. So, if you want to do BOLC before med school, you can get discharged 30 days before the start of your 6 weeks thing at Camp Bullis.
2) For PTDY (nonchargeable leave), you can be issued of up to 10 days.
3) You will get transitional leave based on the amount of leave days you have saved up.

With that said, you can get of RA 2.5-3.0 months before your school date or officer training program, assuming that you have at least 60 days of leave.
